Radio 1's play-listing methods - REVEALED!

A rather intriguing article from the Observer:

Just had a read of that. Radio 1 are so far up their own arse. The way they speak about how they make the playlist etc, just everything about them is so arrogant.

awful station.
and the ageism against WOMEN should really have been addressed, as they would'nt have a pot to piss in if confronted on that issue.

They do have an excuse. The difference between Radio 1 and commercial stations is that Radio 1 is funded by the general public. A lot of people get very sensitive about what their money is used for. Radio 1 claims to target a certain audience, and it's failed to target it, so it has to make changes to reach the audience it says it will target. Stations like Capital FM also get an older audience that what they claim to be targetting, but they get paid by advertising companies, not the general public, so it's not such a big deal for them, as long as they can avoid an Ofcom investigation they'll be fine.

I do agree that a blanket ban on artists like Madonna is unfair (she releases mainly pure-pop which isn't really appropriate for Radio 1, but if she does ever release another song that appeals to teenagers, then she should have a chance at being playlisted in my opinion). However, Radio 1 does desperately need to lose its older listeners, so I can understand why they do it.

As horrible and ageist and sexist as it is, if you're a female over a certain age, you need something different/extra for Radio 1 to playlist you.

An "older" popstar (and I hate saying that) releasing a generic dance record just doesn't seem to work for radio playlisters.
That's why Work Bitch and #LIVEITUP by J.Lo got ignored by both Radio 1 and Capital, yet Mariah's #Beautiful (which happened to feature Miquel) got playlisted by both.

What a depressing read. It's no surprise Radio 1 is so rubbish these days when you have tossers like that deciding what gets played these days.

I read this the other day. I noticed that Lily Allen retweeted it with the comment "...interesting" or something to that effect.

That article just drips arrogance.

This is why I tend to listen to Capital (though much less now) and Kiss.

Radio 1 is just a sack of shit now. Streaming is the best choice for me now.

"So far no official video on YouTube," says Ergatoudis. "Twitter followers 12,000 [quite low]."

GOTTA HAVE DAT BRAND POWER!

If you read 'The Nation's Favourite' it hasnt changed that much. There are just new ways of 'measuring' how popular an act may be, in terms of social media etc.

Yep , cos if that Mariah song was a solo single then she would not have had a cat in hells chance of getting on the playlist.

And what really peeved me off about the Britney thing is, they had her at the station as a star guest making a big fuss of her whilst she promoted that very song, yet they did not playlist that song
So good enough to have on as a guest and brown nose, yet not good enough for the precious playlist ?!

They didn't even playlist 'till the world ends' a few years ago, and that was a worldwide hit. Angry Britney fan here

Oh I hear ya! That annoyed me too the way they had her on the morning show and then refused to playlist her song! They didn't playlist Till The World Ends, I Wanna Go & Criminal which were all very good songs! Another angry Britney fan here.

This is why i prefer Radio 2, if the music is half decent, they play it, regardless of the target audience.

The biggest disappointment to me was how little they were actually interested in the music itself but I kind of expected that.

Everything is just the music biz stuff. Looking at YouTube views, Twitter followers, sound cloud hits and talking to the pluggers.

There was little mention of emerging scenes or trying to champion anything. This feels like R1 are just championing music which is already popular.

I also agree with some of the comments about artists like Britney or Mariah who are exploited as celebrities by R1 but find it hard to get their music played.

To be fair to Radio 1, Britney hasn't released anything decent since the Blackout album, which was seven years ago. Work Bitch is/was awful and I've had to switch off most of her other songs since then too.

Radio 1 is crap, they bang on about how great their "NEW MUSIC!!!11111" is but they either find the most boring dirge ever to play (Mumford and Sons, the 1975 etc, it's music to fall asleep to) or a total racket (Arctic Monkeys). The only thing Radio 1 has got going for it is there are no adverts but it hasn't even been stored as a preset on my car radio for years.

This sums up why everything in the mainstream industry is so stale.

Its all what generates income, not how good the material is. I don't listen to Radio 1 (Think 90pc of the stuff today is crap - where is the variety and character ffs) but some of the crap I have heard on there is noise!

Tuneless dance rubbish, overhyped singers and groups. Awful. And don't get me started on Grimshaw. The chart show is a joke - who wants to listen to immature games and what some stupid kid in Bolton thinks of the songs. Thats what Facebook was designed for ffs!!!

I feel we wont see change for a long while.

Both.

Crapital is seven songs on constant repeat. Heart is worse....that should face a UN Human Rights Tribunal.

I wouldn't listen to Radio 1 if you paid me, im not one of the 12 thousand followers

I wouldn't even say Radio 1 are about music, I only hear of Radio 1 when they are talking about the hosts/DJ's on TV. Its like the judges being bigger than the music on Xfactor

I get more new music from Digital spy and these forums (funnily enough) or my own facebook/twitter accounts

It's an incredibly crude way of playlisting songs, but they were told their audience was too old and they needed to lower the average age.

The only part of this that really pissed me off is them refusing to playlist a band almost purely because they didn't have enough twitter followers. I appreciate they want to get a feel for how popular a band is, and to an extent that makes sense to take it into consideration, if you've pushed a band and it still isn't popular with the audience, maybe you should move on. But it's hardly championing new music if you wait for it to get a certain amount of followers before you play it...

Completely agree with this. How is a new act supposed to gain a following without radio support? It's a shame to think of how many decent acts are probably falling off the radar before they've even had a chance.

It's all about the hype machine these days unfortunately.

Yeah, I couldn't believe how they chose tracks not so much on how good or interesting they are, but on how many followers on social media they have! I'd expect that kind of attitude on a commercial station, but not on a licence fee funded one. Radio 1 should be promoting new music, not just playing what is already popular.
