Interesting talk about CS
I was doing a Car Boot sale today & somehow I managed to get talking to a lovely woman about soaps (of all things). I asked her which soap she loved best & she said Corrie, I said that it was a cross between Emmerdale & EastEnders.
Then we got talking about stunts Coronation Street have done & the woman said that she hated it when Corrie did big stunts such as fires, car crashes, explosions, trams coming off viaducts, etc. because she thought that they only do this to get viewers & it is an excuse to kill off characters. She said that she preferred character-driven drama instead of blowing up buildings. But I said that as well as character-driven drama they need to have disasters to reflect real life. Would you agree with the woman that you prefer to have character-driven drama or would you prefer to have stunts/disasters? |

The occasional major drama or stunt works perfectly well and stirs the emotions but to have too many and too frequently has a deadening and desensitising effect which makes me as a viewer disconnect and become too aware of the unreality of it all, thereby negating the familiarity and inclusiveness, the very things we watch the soaps to enjoy identifying with in the first place. |

A healthy mix of both works. You don't want a boring soap but you don't want an un-realistic one either.

Character-driven all the way. If the writing's good enough (assuming the actors can act) then you don't need stunts.
