Soaps are what make this country what it is.
Whatever your favourite soap may be, what ever rivalries may exist, the output of television drama in this country would be nothing without soap.
Soap isn't some throwaway, disposable saga. Soap embodies this country, it represents this country and soap will stand strong long after you or I have left this world. I am so proud that we have THEE best soaps in the world. Soaps that beat all other versions of television. (just look at the ratings!) We are so incredibly lucky and we should never forget that, whatever soap may be our favourite, we are so very, very lucky. |

I agree. Deep down I wouldn't want any of them axed even if I had a couple of them at least

I agree completely. Honestly I think BBC and ITV especially would be screwed without them. They provide a hook for people to tune in to the main channels. When they're at the top of their game, they are quality unmissable drama. The siege storyline on Emmerdale last year was one of the darkest and most exciting pieces of British drama. I'll be honest, sometimes I think some of our actual drama series are more soft and safe than our soaps at times.

Yeah plus the Wars and the Welfare State and stuff.
Seriously, we are lucky in Britain to have such good quality soaps. If you look at soaps from other countries, they're normally just badly acted and full of beautiful people (as in America and South America) or slightly conservative (as in Australian). |

Soaps are also handy for us to moan about, especially Fiz.

I watched a documentary about soaps on youtube called 'How Soaps Changed The World' & apparently the whole reason why a Soap Star's private life is up for grabs was because everyone found about Leslie Grantham's past back in the 80's.
Then an ex EastEnders character said that in his opinion if it wasn't for EastEnders then Heat, OK, & all other celebrity magazines wouldn't have launched. Also, if Brookside hadn't came along, where would soaps be today? |

I agree with this post so much OP. I'm an Eastenders viewer alone but I can see from this forum that there is a passion for British soaps that is infectious. The Emmerdale viewers rave about their show as much as the Doctors or Hollyoaks fans do and I feel like no matter what we're all united on here on our love for soaps, no matter which ones we think are the best or what we disagree on we're all soap fans on here and I love that.
