rbautz
26-05-2014
He hit me and it felt like a kiss. Jim brought me back. Reminded me of when we were kids. This is Ultraviolence.

Lyrics

Quote:
“ He used to call me DN
It stood for deadly nightshade
Cause I was filled with poison
But blessed with beauty and rage
Jim told me that he hit me and it felt like a kiss
Jim brought me back
Reminded me of when we were kids

[Chorus]
This is ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that ultraviolence

[Verse 2]
He used to call me poison
Cause I was poison ivy
I could have died right there
Cause Jim was right beside me
Jim raised me up
He hurt me but it felt like true love
Jim tied me up
Loving him was ever enough

[Chorus]

We can go back to New York
Cause loving him was really hard
We can go back to town
Heaven don't know who we are
Heaven is on earth
I will do anything for you, babe
Guess it is meant to be
Crying tears of gold, like Adam and Eve

[Spoken]
I love you the first time
I love you the last time
Yo soy la princesa, comprende these late nights
Cause I'm your jazz singer
And you're my cult leader
I love you forever
I really love you forever”

After listening to Shades of cool and this i am much happier, this is the sort of stuff i was hoping for after the ordinary(for her) West coast, cant wait for the album.

Another gorgeously dark tune. Guess I can see what she was talking about when she said the album is so dark its wrong but at the same time still beautiful.

The only thing I find a bit iffy about this tune is weeeell...its another of these songs she does with lyrical content suggesting she rather enjoyed being on the receiving end of a bit of smack my b*tch up in whatever past relationship she had. You're never sure whether this is 100% true (hope not), whether its some sort of artistic metaphor about the times we live in or whether she just says it to mess with peoples heads. Possibly all three.

There's also references of course in the lyrics to her album she did under the name of May Jailer which was of course "Sirens" and Tropico with the Adam and Eve line. When she says Jim I'm also not sure whether that's the boyfriend or whether she's meaning Jim Morrison who as we know is another of her much loved icons.

But all in all that's whats fun about Lana's songs. You can get your teeth into them, try and figure out what she's talking about and still probably still come nowhere near!

So if you take this, West Coast, Shades of Cool, the bit of Cruel World she's played and of course Black Beauty I think we can see Ultraviolence is shaping up very nicely indeed.

Plus hopefully she'll start playing all the new songs live soon!

Wonder is the line a reference to the infamous Crystals song
"He hit me (And it felt like a kiss) ?

This is a lot more like her first record than West Coast, but still retaining a rockier element to it. Still haven't heard Shades Of Cool yet but this album seems like it's going to be brilliant already. Her live singing here is perfect too.

Aaah Residents Fan brilliant observation well spotted. So that's where she's really coming from on this track. She always does this with her songs doesn't she? You get something in them that makes you raise an eyebrow and there's always a subtext to it. Something deeper you don't see on the surface.

Its like with the West Coast video rbautz spotted the whole video is a tribute to Chet Baker who is doubtlessly another of Lana's icons. All the kids on the You-Tube comments are saying things like "whys she with that creepy old guy in the back of the car???" But its her and Chet.

God I love all of Lana's arty references. You can learn so much from her.
