Don't think these have been mentioned yet...

Baby Please Don't Go - Them (original by Big Joe Williams)
Frikin awesome cover. I wish Van Morrison had done more blues albums - his 'blues' voice in this cover is just phenomenal.

Two Covers by "Esther Phillips" that are better than the original

From a Whisper to a Scream - original by Alain Tou Toussaint
Home is where the hatred is - original by Gil Scott-Heron

Foo Fighters cover of Wings' - Band on the Run (on Radio 1's 35th anniversary album.
- I like the original but Foo Fighters version of it is superb

I also really like the Ataris cover of The Boys of Summer (original from Don Henley) - although I like the original also

Siren Gene's cover of Kate Bush/Maxwell's "This Woman's Work" is absolutely stunning. I really recommend it.

I agree that Ella Fitzgerald does a great version of 'Sunshine Of Your Love' although I don't like Donna Summer's MacArthur Park. I like Donna Summer but I've never liked 'MacArthur Park' in any version as I don't like the song. Donna Summer's version of 'Could It Be Magic' (original by Barry Manilow) is my favourite version.

I agree that The Ataris did a great version of Don Henley's 'Boys Of Summer'. Much better than DJ Sammy's awful dance version.

Kim Carnes version of Bette Davis Eyes is far better than the Jackie DeShannon original (which sounds nothing like Carnes' synthy number- it's a jaunty piano pop song!)

I like the Pet Shop Boys' Always On My Mind. I like covers which bring something new to the table-in their case, deadpan delivery and the synth sound. Same with Tainted Love-I like both the original and the cover. Marc Almond's voice adds a note of tragedy and he slowed the song down a bit.

Possibly the one of the worst covers ever IMHO - used to jump for the stereo remote the moment it came on the radio to change stations - especially the intro - horrid!!!

Baby Please Don't Go - Them (original by Big Joe Williams)
(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone - The Monkees (original by Paul Revere & the Raiders)

I'm also very fond of Steve Hillage's cover of It's All Too Much (original by some 60s pop group).
Budgie did an even better cover of Baby Please Don't Go. One of the most underated bands of all time.

I tend to agree on a lot of their songs. I said that I prefered Steps version of Tragedy as althought I think the early Bee Gees songs were very good, they later began to sound like chip monks! They wrote some great songs though.
