There was something about a guy getting information about accounts of Apple employees to prove that their infrastructure wasn't safe, not sure if that included passwords though. When a vulnerability is reported it's possible it was already exploited, or right after that. One does not have to use the information immediately, they can sit on it for a while before striking.
