This.

Whatever provides the most story potential.

Eastenders needed both a boost of familiar faces, a clear out and a boost of new blood.

We've had sufficient amounts of all three so far IMO.

I agree, as Barbara Windsor is hesitant to a full time return why not bring her back now and then.

Would also like to see a few more comebacks but this time a few "classic" characters.

How about Kelvin Carpenter come back to see Ian.

Sue Osman's story finally gets a proper resolution some 25 years later, also briefly re-introducing Nej Adamson as Ali.

Kathy Mitchell not really dead after all but suffered amnesia after her car crash a few years ago.

I don't mind the returns but some of them were awful bores as regular characters and should be kept to guest appearances. I also wouldn't mind seeing a few returnees who were prominent before the Santer era. All those DTC has brought back are from that time.

This.....

Honey's wasn't stupid, Billy and her see each other off screen all the time....so makes sense.

Also Tanya comes back to the SQ Now and then to pick up Oscar!

I'm loving all the returns, especially the shocks such as Jane and Honey

As long as we don not get Kirsty, Vanessa , Callum ore Carl back.

Aside from Stacey, pretty much every return this year has been natural or necessary for story-purposes. I like it.

I was very pleased to see Honey and the children again. It's realistic that characters who have left Walford might return to visit family or friends occasionally.

But they don't suddenly move in and stay for several months, LOL.. No one in my family has anyway..

I think more unrealistic is continued reference to people who are supposedly "still on the scene" but haven't been invited back - a bit like umpteen references to "Martin" by Sonia, yet he is always "too busy" to accompany here on her trips to the square.

Would have liked to have seen Robbie, wonder why Dean Gaffney couldnt put in an appearance?

Patsy Palmer, Charlie Brooks & Letitia Dean are the three worst for it.

They should only get so many chances then be killed offscreen if they can't commit.

Not bothered really

But i do think their needs to be a change in allowing actors to do other projects affecting their time in the show

Jessie Wallace doing the play is no problem as it is a month or two and her character isn't involved in any major storylines yet

However Lacey Turner returns and then leaves to go and film Our Girl, resulting in her storylines being on the back burner. They should of let Lacey film Our Girl first and then bring stacey back. Not bring her in for a few weeks, have her locked up and then forget her for a few months. It can cause disrpution in flow.

The same should apply to Samantha Womack who i believe has barely appeared in EE recently as she is flming the new series of Mount Pleasant. Ronnie should of remained in Ibiza while Roxy returned and then to have Ronnie return once she was done doing Mount Pleasant.

Mike Reid was far worse than any of the above. He was back and forth like a boomerang.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Soaps are supposed to portray real life and in real life people do go back to the places they used to live so they can spend time with friends/family who still live there. Having people come back makes much more sense than them leaving and never being seen/heard of ever again.

It actually doesn't bother me. The way I see it is if actors weren't allowed to take a break then the show may be running the risk of losing them permanently. One of Corrie's biggest strengths is they have several long serving characters, while EastEnders as a whole are low in supply when it comes to their long term characters.

But characters should never be brought back just for the sake of it, and if the writers don't have a clear direction for them that doesn't stays true to their previous stint then there is no need to bother. I'm pointing the finger firmly at Sharon and Kat.

Didn't he leave because he found the it too depressing, then when he returned they made him run down Tiffany! I can just imagine him reading the Xmas Day scripts!!

Lol! I'm not sure. I think that was Arthur Fowler Mike Reid came back and forth a lot between 1995 and 2005. I always looked forward to Frank's returns.

I can just imagine the venom a certain fan felt after Frank killed "our heroine" Tiffany .

I totally don't understand this attitude, especially the hostility to Patsy Palmer. In any job your only responsibility is to do it to the best of your ability while you are being paid to do so, and to honour the terms of your contract. No one has any obligation to renew their contract if they don't want to, and if they fancy coming and going, doing other things in between, or taking breaks to be with their families, and TPTB ok it, why shouldn't they? It might cause problems with storylines, but that's inevitable in a long-running serial. I'm at a loss as to why anyone thinks they are doing anything wrong. Adam Woodyatt and Wlliam Roache may be happy to play the same character their whole career, but most actors aren't. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be free to come and go if the producers can accommodate them.

I agree with you. The only issue I have with Palmer is that she keeps slagging the show off when she's not in it

Then why do others get killed off for wanting the same? why do these three get special treatment? now that's the big question.

I suppose there are a number of factors, including the relationship a particular actor has with the production team du jour, and how TPTB decide their exit storyline will fit with everything else they have planned. Do they feel a big dramatic death is just what they need at that moment?

I agree that the character of Pat and Pam St. Clement were treated appallingly, but I suspect Bryan Kirkwood wanted to create a 'Big Iconic EE Moment' with Pat's death, probably in the knowledge he would be leaving soonish and therefore didn't care that it would be detrimental to the show in the long term.

I'm sure I read that in a Mike Read interview. Frank was awesome. I loved that week where Peggy found him in Spain shacked up with Rula Lenska.
