Who has appeared in the most Emmerdale episodes in the shows history?

Does anybody know the actor or actress who has appeared in the most episodes of Emmerdale? I don't trust IMDB because it says Chas has appeared in over 1000 episodes since her debut in 2003 but Alan has only appeared in 511 episodes, this information cannot be correct? It says Shelia Mercier has only appeared in 220 episodes? This information deffo cannot be correct. Neither can it be correct that Chas has appeared in the most episodes in the shows history. Can anybody help?

I'm not saying it is but why can't it be correct? There are a lot more episodes now and I think chas was literally in every episode for the last year and a half!

Alan might of been in it for years but towards the end we went months without seeing him.

Surely Debbie is near the top?

Of course I do!

I've just checked the hollyoaks list - the top 5 are tony, Ste, Darren Mercedes and Carmel. Seems legit to me so I would trust imdb with the emmerdale list

I wouldn't be surprised seeing as there was a lengthy period where Chas seemed to pop up in every single episode.

Up until 1997 Emmerdale (Farm) used to be on only twice a week and since then has gradually gained an extra episode per week until it's current status of 6 episodes per week (if you count the double eps on a Thursday).

So those people who were in the show during the 2 episodes per week era would have appeared in less episodes than the more recent cast members.

IMDB is definitely out on the numbers as Sheila Mercier had appeared in 306 episodes already by 1976 as noted here on Emmerdale Wikia. The same site is working towards a list of appearances for every character but it's far from finished yet. Other than that, I don't think there's another reference on the web to find out.

I doubt it's accurate. There are many early episode missing from the list (which will not have cast credits) for the early years. It looks like they have all episodes up to early August '73 and then (very) intermittently thereafter until around mid-2002, So only characters introduced after then will have any accuracy to them.
