The overuse of a twist...
Goosebee

Is it just me or does it seem to be that all of a sudden everyone is promoting twists within soaps. It started as a hollyoaks thing and now Eastenders and Coronation Street are doing the same. The problem in my eyes however is that the unexpected is becoming expected as when we are told a twist is coming it is no longer a surprise.

I personally think Eastenders recent ones have all been very good but I would rather they were reacted to when aired so that we aren't waiting for them...

Not sure if this makes any sense or not. Does anyone agree?

I think with the huge amount of spoilers we get and forums like this where soap fans can discuss their theories etc the twist become predictable and most of the time you're not shocked by them.

If you think about, we don't really have twists, we should have things that aren't in the spoilers. This is is how it was in the days before spoilers.

EastEnders had a huge twist last week, so after that I do think they need to hold on to the reigns.

Yeah, I tend to stay out of theory threads, It ruins it for me!

I like watching it as it happens, and I like twists and surprises, something that was missing nearly all of Lorraine Newman's era!

Yeah, we didn't really need DTC's warning that there was a shock tonight.

It's like being told a movie has a big twist ending, you spend the whole movie guessing what it will be and inevitably guess correctly without being able to enjoy just being shocked.

I predicted the David ending but never in a million years predict Honey and Jane earlier in the year. Perhaps because no hints whatsoever from previous episodes. Although I would argue the David twist is more important than Honey's guest appearance. So yeah, I like stuff not being in spoilers it's a nice surprise every now and then.

I wouldn't call Honey or Jane returning "twists", however. They are more like surprises.

I think it's fine. It's a nice teaser. And his aim was to entice viewers away from watching BGT and basically fill twitter with talk of what had happened so that anyone who didn't watch live might regret it and watch live again on Thursday.

They're trying to turn EastEnders into appointment TV, and that's fine by me.

Twists have become expected now; so much so that a lot of people are starting to guess that there will be a twist and what the twist is so the element of surprise isn't even there anymore.

I'm an avid spoiler reader but I think they should release less of them.

Hollyoaks started it with Lynsey's death but EE have jumped on the bandwagon and made themselves do twists too! The thug with EE is that they tell us there's going to be a twist so we're expecting it but with HO they don't which is much better.
