its funny to see this happen especially when said band ends up flopping anyway. same can be said for solo indie acts too.

In a day when the DS Music Forum is plagued by dull/stupid threads on it's first page this one stands out as the most pointless.

One thing you seem to forget is that a flop for an indie band is not as damaging to their career as it would be to a pop star who needs good sales to survive. Also if an indie band sells less than a pop band, that is the norm rather than the exception. |

Which bands are classed as 'indie' bands these days?

oh for f sake!!! some of you on here....if you've got nothing good to say......anyway if you must know I was referring to Bombay bicycle clubs's comments on one directions Big Weekend performance, belittling their showmanship. this is just an example but yeah, ive come across a lot of this and worse in the past - up and coming acts bad mouthing those who are bigger than them before they've even made it themselves. I cant think of any of the top of my head as I honestly cant remember any of the acts who made the comments in the first place, just generic indie acts,

Ah, I get it, you're a 1D fan and you have to vent your understandable self-loathing by accusing those with more discerning taste of "snobbery". A classic case.

far from it! im not a 1D fan but they are an established act prone to snobby attitudes because they are manufactured which is fair game to some, but you know, opinions are like assholes, everyones got one....

I don't think I'd call Bombay Bicycle Club "up and coming"... They've had nowhere near 1D's level of success and have only topped the album chart this year but they've been around at least six or seven years with relatively good popularity.

From what I can tell he was just offering his opinion that the didn't put that much enthusiasm into their performance, standing around with their hands in their pockets (they were probably stoned at the time!)
Since when were opinions not allowed? He actually said he was looking forward to the performance (if not the music). |

When people are asked for opinions on things they don't like they are likely to say they don't like it. This is seen as a normal reaction
If a band are asked about another band they don't like and they say they don't like them then all of a sudden they are clearly after publicity It's complete nonsense. If someone asked me what I thought of 1D i'd say that to me they are ****ing awful. That's just an opinion. I'm not after publicity |

The worst type of music snobbery in my opinion is when fans of mainstream acts look down on other acts because "well if i haven't heard of them, they must be rubbish" or "who are they, how many records have they sold, they must be rubbish" classic example is when arcade fire won a grammy over justin beiber, the outrage was quite disturbing.. That kind of music snobbery is the worst. Don't get me wrong most people in indie bands are annoying but in my humble opinion if you write your own music, play your own instruments etc then i feel you have a right to scrutinize those that don't.

I look back fondly on the days as a teenage NME reader making fun with my clique of the Bros and Rick Astley fans in our class
I'm grown up now and would not dream of slating my niece for liking One Direction (though of course I hope her music taste will improve with age )Sorry to the OP but when you begin to discover there is a whole world of different music out there other than the charts, music snobbery can be fun

I also remember, people on here claiming that Cheryl Cole (seriously) was a more deserving winner of British Female at the Brits than Laura Marling, who won, with people saying "Well I've never heard of her...". Presumably because Laura Marling hadn't been on commercial radio, been a tabloid regular or performed on talent shows. In the case of the OP, I would seriously suggest becoming more acquainted with bands before ridiculing them. Bombay Bicycle Club are hardly "an up and coming" band. Their frontman said, "I wasn't expecting to enjoy their music, but I was expecting to enjoy their showmanship... but they almost just had their hands in their pockets. It was bizarre." I'm failing to see where the "snobbery", as the OP puts it. If anything it's the opposite - they suggest they weren't a fan of their songs, but would watch, and hope to enjoy, their set anyway. A healthy enough approach to music. I haven't seen One Direction's set, but from what I've read, Bombay Bicycle Club's opinion is hardly a unique one. |
