During the past 10 years a lot of people are referring to Coronation Street as "Corrie". Even some of the ITV continuity announcers refer to it as that! Who is responsible for it becoming commonly referred to as this much shorter title?

No it doesn't bother me so much! I'm just wondering why and who is responsible for it becoming known as the much shorter "Corrie". That is all!

In the 80's a number of people referred to it as "The Street", though not to the extent of Corrie now. Though that phased out.

With the rise of the internet and texting over the last 10 years everyone is too lazy to type things out in full. EastEnders is referred to as EE by most! lol I don't see much of an issue with it.

I don't remember how it came about, the show was actually officially promoted as 'Killer Corrie' during the Hillman saga. Just feels right.

I think it always has been. It may only be in recent years that it is referred to like that on screen but friends of mine in the North were calling it Corrie back in the mid 80s. It probably happened before that. It's just a nickname, like Brookie for Brookside that caught on.

I remember when it was referred to as 'The Street', and when newspapers had articles headline 'Street star......', I always thought it made them sound like prostitutes!

We've called it Corrie for a long time. My mum always referred to it as Corrie from the end of the 60's, early 70's (and maybe before that but I can't remember).

I don't think anyone in particular is responsible for it in the media although someone must have come up with "Killer Corrie"

I invented the term "Corrie" back in 1992, whilst out on the ale with a few mates who preferred Crossroads.
That night outside the Pig & Whistle, whilst I was duly kicking their heads in, I was too drunk to say "Coronation Street," hence the term "Corrie" was born.

I was rather prolific back then for some reason, as it was also around that time that I invented the Club Sandwich, Ayia Napa, and Dogging.

Within a year, I'd invented Ladettes too.
Zoe Ball you might remember was my infamous prototype.
Boy could she drink and scrap.

I was also blamed for inventing Tony Blair, but I've long since washed my hands of that one.

I invented the term chavs and selfie. I'm counting the millions as I speak. Back to the OP's initial question. I recall Paul O' Grady referring to it as Corrie way back when.

I have also heard it called 'enders' by some of the actors in it which somehow always seems slightly pretentious to me.

As for 'Corrie' round these parts it has always been called that, right from its early days. I have never heard anyone other than TV announcers call it the 'street'.

Yuck! Doesn't even feel right.

Corrie sounds right, and I've always said Corrie.

We have a less cuddly nick name for it - although it's a lot more fitting a much of the time.!

Half-rhymes with 'Coronation' and begins with an M.

Similarly to that, events like this week's in Corrie with Tina, are referred to as the "Corrie Murder Week", exactly like with the promotion of 'Killer Corrie' during the Hillman saga.

Some people call it "Coro"

Corrie just rolls off the tongue easily.

It`s a tern of endearment - a nickname we all recognise instantly.
Corrie is as part of British culture as the Royal family. I`m sure the Queen calls it Corrie too. The Queen Mother was a huge fan too.

I think an abbreviation is a different thing. I doubt anyone says EE out loud in real life.

But plenty say Corrie in general conversation.
