Not sure if this is quite the right place, but it doesn't really fit anywhere else...

We have a BT Verve 500 cordless phone which we now need a second handset for. But they don't make them anymore. Can any DECT-compatible phone pair up with the system?

AFAIK the BT Verve 500 is GAP (Generic Access Profile) compatible which means you can use any compatible handset with any base unit: e.g. a Panasonic GAP handset will work with a BT GAP compatible unit.
However features that may not work, are the options in the advanced menu - for example: accessing the answer machine
or have a look here http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_kw...ional+handsets

All we need to do is answer and make calls. We now have a three floor house and can't hear the downstairs one ring. Even if we did, we wouldn't make it down in time!

Thanks for the info

I'd suggest this

but with a 3 floor house I'd get a four phone set - in addition to what you have.

That's seems a good buy, if I can't get hold of a cheap second handset. I'm not spending more than about £20 or so to get a second handset or new pair.

We really don't need 4 handsets, it's not a big house. The middle floor is the kids rooms and bathroom. We only have a living room and kitchen downstairs, which have the existing phone. We just need a second one for the top floor which is our office and main bedroom. The kids can go up one or down one if they have to!

I decided it was too expensive to buy an extra handset for my Panasonic, so bought a completely new four handset system instead (and kept the old two handset one on a separate line).
