EDIT: I have now downloaded the manual for this particular device and it does not mention any frame conversion so I would have to conclude it does not do this. What it does is give the "standard" selection of colour modulation - automatic, PAL or NTSC.”

I don't deny that a TV that can display 50Hz will give better results. Converting 50Hz field rates to 60Hz will result in jitter on movement.

However you conclusions are wrong .
PAL is 50Hz (except in Brazil which uses a special 60Hz PAL known as PAL M).
NTSC is 60Hz everywhere including the output of your DVD machine.
Automatic means it will output PAL from a 576i disk as used in Europe and NTSC from a 480i disk as used in US, Canada, and Japan.

I do suggest you try it with a TV switched to true NTSC or failing that look at it with a waveform monitor.

I don't have that DVD player so I can't however the manual makes it clear that is does not do frame conversion. Even the error description where it talks about a black and white picture matches what you get when the colour modulation is not supported by the TV but the frame rate is.

For my DVD/blu-ray players I know the frame rate because it matches the resolution and my TV gives the resolution on the info button. If I select PAL on the output then the resolution is still 480i when playing a US disk, the PAL/NTSC switching does nothing as I don't connect using composite. There is no frame rate conversion on my players that have almost identical wording to the user manual for the Philips player.
