According to their twitter feed, all Three phones will be sold unlocked and if you already have a device, you can take it in store and get it unlocked for free:

As far as I know they should be unlocked too. The downside is that PAYG phones have little to no subsidy as they are effectively SIM free now.

It's unlocked. Like unlocked unlocked. And it applies to all phones. And you can get your old phones unlocked for free.

I've already gotten two of my old phones unlocked.

Thats never normally the case with iphones they are always locked to the network.
Wonder if other networks are doing the same.

I've just filled in the form to unlock mine, no mention of cost on either the website or the web form.

They're not.

CPW and P4U phones come unlocked.
O2 contract phones come locked but can be unlocked for free by O2 during the term of the contract. Pay as you go is £15 but only after 12 months.
Vodafone phones are locked, contract customers can unlock for free after 12 months otherwise they pay £19.99. Pay as you go customers can unlock at any time for £19.99.
EE charge £20 for unlocking contract customers phones, you must have had the phone for at least 6 months before EE will unlock it.
Three sell unlocked phones and you can unlock any phone on their network for free.

In regards to iPhones, CPW is the only place that sells iPhones that lock to the first SIM.

The above are the standard unlocking policies. There are exceptions to the rule, for example Vodafone can waive the £19.99 for any customer and some networks may sell a certain phone model unlocked for a short time during the release window or even permanently if the manufacturer delivers only unlocked batches to the retailer.

Not the case, you can buy from Apple, they're never locked. You can buy from Carphone and they lock to the first SIM (this makes their stock easier, but you don't get a discount on the vendor price). So never buy unlocked from Carphone

All carphone warehouse phones are unlocked apart from the iPhone which locks to first network, dunno whether that's a characteristic of the iPhone or carphone iPhones in particular.

Just remember kids, if your phone is NOT registered to you i.e a second hand phone, they won't do it without permission from the original owner!

They are locked until you contact the network either from O2 and three for free or at cost from the other networks. Every week I see threads on forums asking how to unlock them. It's about time they made all phones sold unlocked without the need to contact the network.

I'm going to say this for the last time.

If you buy a new iPhone from Three it comes unlocked.

How hard is that to understand?

No, not the case for others.
I've listed the other networks policies above.

Not sure why you're still saying iPhones from Three are locked?

Or have I misunderstood or something?

I'll have to have my MiFi unlocked. I have paid to unlock my Three phones in the past to use with foreign SIMs.

As I understand, P4U also have the "lock to first UK sim" for iPhone stock now.
