The fact that James' runaway wife Emma keeps getting mentioned has to be significant, right? If they wanted to introduce James as a single father they could've just said she died years ago. So she's obviously been kept alive for a reason. Either she will turn up in the village at a later date, or she'll be found buried under a patio somewhere...
Option number 2 might finally make James a bit more interesting but it'll be laughable if Chas has gone from one killer to another. She should just give up on blokes altogether and run off with that women who was eyeing her up last night.
