What happened to their apple pies?

I took my daughter to McD's for lunch today. We hardly ever go there, I think December was the last time we went, and I haven't ordered an apple pie in ages, but the one I got today was not very nice at all. The apple pies I remember (in Canada) had a soft-ish outer dough, this one felt really greasy and overcooked. The filling tasted the same, maybe less cinnamon-y than I recall. My daughter ate about half of hers and put it back on the tray, she thought it was gross, lol.

It's possible the apple pies have always been like that here. Anyone ordered one lately?

McDonald's apple pies i've had have never had a soft dough. They've always been crisp.

Yeah never had a doughy one, always crispy.

I think they've always been deep-fried, so in that sense they weren't 'doughy', but I'll post a couple of pictures so you can see the difference:

This is what I remember from a few years ago:

This is what I had today:

The texture on the second one is completely different, is that how they've always been here or did they once look like the one in the first picture?

Second one.

Hmm, okay, the answer to my question then might be that nothing has happened to it, it was just never made here the way I prefer it. I shan't be wasting my money on one again.

TBF I usually only have one per decade. They may have changed and changed back inbetween.

I had the second one in the picture. The first picture looks much nicer. Maybe McDonalds has different suppliers of pies in different region. I don't live in Germany, but the pies I had were Made in Germany.

Do they still do the mincemeat and custard one at christmas? mmmmm

As far as I can remember it's always been the crispy one, though the softer one looks nicer.

Lol, it's not gourmet grub, but it's alright for an occasional outing. I go maybe 2 or 3 times a year, not exactly a regular, and as I said, it's been ages (probably 6 years) since I had one of their pies. Everything in moderation and all that.

That's probably true, that they have different companies supplying their food in different locations. Their burgers taste the same to my tastebuds though; not exactly delicious, but consistent at least.

Some of it tastes quite nice actually, but the apple pies have always been pretty rank.

2nd pic is always the version we get in the UK and I don't think they have changed at all. Always been crispy and not noticed a change in taste, even though I have them maybe once or twice a year. (doughy?...eww.. no thanks)

McDonalds stopped deep frying their apple pies around 2012 in UK and Canada. They are now oven cooked.

Looks like you preferred the deep fried ones.

I worked in McDonalds in 1991. The pies were my favourite item! I remember all the different flavours they use to do. Peach, pineapple, toffee and banana (my favourite) strawberry and almond custard, mince and rum sauce, apple and blackberry, mixed fruit. These all stick in my mind. There were loads but I can't remember any more.

That's possible, but they didn't taste 'deep fried', if that makes sense, the old pies I mean. They were softer in texture, not crispy. The one I had recently tasted greasy, which seems odd if it's oven baked. Maybe they deep fry them, then freeze them, then when you order one it's "oven baked"?

There are obviously a lot of people who think their food tastes nice based on how well McD's does as a franchise. I doubt anyone is under the illusion that it's healthy or good for them. Again, everything in moderation.

The pastry is raw when they are delivered so they definitely cooked on site. Probably added more fat to make up for not being deep fried.
