I think many people forget Pat Evans was pretty horrible when she started. She was a terrible mum to David Wicks and Simon Wicks and only in the last 10 - 15 yearsish she started to be nice that she had so much family around her.
Shirley Carter - Awful parent and a horrible character, now has family... all the signs are there for her to be the next Pat id the actress stays. Shirley and Pat ARE the same.

It is all about ratings and dramatic plots. I used to love watching Eastenders in the 80's via Youtube clips, purely for the dialogue and conversation and interactions. You didn't need a explosion or shock or stunt every month.

Yes I would say Kathy Beale, Pat and Pauline Evans were great and would be today. I feel cheated... I can't even really remember Kathy's stint (except Youtube clips) and I only ever saw the Pauline that was fowl (pun intended.) I remember Sonia Fowler once saying "what happened to the woman the cleaned me up after I had a fall and cut my knee, the woman that everybody loved and respected"... then again she dared to question TPTB. I lalways wonder when they will turn on Adam Woodyatt or Steve McFadden or June Brown when they dare say o or want even more time off like Patsy "time off" Palmer.
