Android Data Usage!
I have a Samsung Y which even if left in the draw and not used is gobbling up 16mb of data per day and doesn't happen at a specific time sometimes in the middle of the night. This doesn't sound a lot but adds up to 500mb of the 1gb monthly data allowance. I have removed all the apps that I added like Facebook and antivirus and reset the phone back to factory default but still it goes on. I loaded a data monitor app which tells me the data is being used by the 'Download Manager' that's it!
Any ideas anyone? |

Many apps will auto update unless you tell them not to. Worst offenders are things like Google maps which seem to update ev ry few days.
Go to play store and from menu select option to turn off auto updates |

Is there any reason the Y isn't connected to a Wi-Fi connection, out of interest? This would solve the problem fairly quickly. |

By default, this is set to Update on Wi-Fi Only, so unless this has been overriden, app updates shouldn't be the concern.

remember that you will probably need to set to update only on wifi on an app by app basis.
Also if you are running kitkat then network monitor will give you mobile data usage by app. |

Thanks for the replies, I have already turned off app auto updates in Goggle Play, and turned off auto software updates in "About Phone" The reason it's not on wifi is that it is actually my Mums phone and she doesn't have wifi. It's not actually taking her over the data limit at the moment but quite close which is annoying. I temporally removed Facebook because that seemed like it could be a culprit. She doesn't have many other apps on there that we have added. Just BBC weather and news apps, banking app and Kaspersky, only got Kaspersky because the banking app insisted. But it is set up to only update once a week, and I tried completely removing it but again no difference.
When I try to pin it down with the data usage app it lists like internet/email/Facebook/Kaspersky etc etc and the amounts etc app has used on that day most of them very small amounts but the at the top of the list "Datamanager" and always between 15 and 16mb. It's a puzzle! |

I've just looked at my list of apps and the ones that are using most data and Download Manager doesn't appear at all. Is it a Samsung thing?

Could be a Samsung thing I don't know! I don't really know what Download Manager does to be honest. It obviously downloads things but for what purpose.
The problem seems to have stopped at the moment, I won't hold my breath. |
