And they lost a lot of long term fans, myself included, at the same time. I still haven't got back into the show on a regular basis.

It wasn't even his idea. It was pitched at a storyline conference and a lot of the team backed the idea (Jeff Povey - one of the writers was one of those people). John Yorke would have agreed to it as well, as he has to sign off all major story lines when he was controller of BBC Drama.
