Hi everyone, looking for any help with a horrible situation. My grandmother has recently been diagnosed with dementia, which means she is having to move from her house into a care home. She has an adult Bengal cat (about 7 years old), which she obviously cannot take with her. We need to rehome, as she has always been my grandmother's companion, and we cannot take her in as we have a dog - she is quite a shy little thing, and will not settle with a dog, although really lovely once she knows you (she has lived with another cat before). I have been in preliminary contact with Cats' Protection, who have said they won't take in Bengal's as a matter of policy, regardless of temperament.

Does anyone have any idea as to where we can go from here? She is being fed and played with at her house at the moment by family members (as my grandmother needs an eye kept on her as well), but when the home sale goes through she will need somewhere to go.

Probably best to contact Bengal owners clubs and breeders - maybe the breeder gran got her from if you know?
Bengals are gorgeous cats, I wonder why Cats Protection won't take them on?

Have you tried catsey OP ? They have a lot of helpful people and a rescue section too.

I've emailed off to a few breeders, but unfortunately haven't got any replies yet. I've posted an email to bengalcatclub.org as well, so that they can put an advert on. I've never heard of catsey, so will have a look at that now, so thank you!

I thought it was a strange policy for cats' protection to have, but they must have their reasons - they said it was to do with them not mixing well in a cattery environment. She has lived with another cat in the past though, and had no problems.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of my gran's illness, we are not sure who bred her. We know she is from the North West of England, but after that, no idea!

CatChat is a sort of 'umbrella' website for cat shelters - you will be able to find some of the smaller charities in your area there.
Sadly there are loads of cats needing new homes at the moment. However demand for Bengals is very high so I'm hopeful you will find someone to take her on soon.

If you look on http://www.catchat.org/ you should be able to find rescues close to your gran's and/or Bengal specific rescues.

Some other breed rescues, like http://www.rushdenpersianrescue.co.uk/ will take other breeds and/or point you in the right direction. The lady at Rushden Persian (Patsy IIRC) is really nice.

Often a phone call is better than an email as it can take a while to get through emails.

So was I, but it wouldn't be fair on either pet to live together - she's beautiful, and so small and kitten-like.

Have you tried the RSPCA ? The only reason I suggest them is I remember a few months ago (just before Christmas) my local one had a few Bengals some pure breed some mix I remember as always thought they were a beautiful breed they also highlighted about what the breed is and what they need different from other breeds .

Thanks cutekitty. I've made contact with the RSPCA, but I would prefer to try local centres first. I've tried 10 centres in the area now, so hoping for some more information soon.

Bit of a long shot, but might be worth running said cat up to the vet to check if she really is Bengal, lots of unusually marked tabbies are passed of Bengal or Bengal cross.

I agree with the CPL's policy, these cats are hardly domesticated and can be real menaces if allowed to roam. My friend lives near one and it waits to attack he dog on a daily basis.... her dog killed it in the end

Otherwise, try a smaller rescue organisation.... else get it pts.

They do occasionally but they say that as pedigrees usually need a lot of specialised care Cats Protection prefer to work with breed specific rescue centres where possible.

That would make sense - the way they worded it to me made it sound like Bengals were trouble! I know they can be a bit wild, but Polly certainly isn't.

Polly is having her injections today and going into rescue on Wednesday.
