EE Shirley and her boys
Does anyone else feel like Shirley's character has changed overnight?
A fortnight ago, she was crying and screaming for Dean to love her, but now Mick has found out about the bath incident, it's like she's suddenly remembered Mick is her son - and now she seems to actively resent Dean being there. It's like she's happy to be with Mick, who loves her, and forgives her for the most awful things; but Dean remembers the awful mother that she was, and reminds her of it, so she isn't bothered about a relationship with him, because she's got Golden Boy Mick. I was really enjoying Shirley recently, but ever since the brother/son reveal, she's become completely unlikeable once again, especially the way she's treating Stan and Dean. This twist is making me like Shirley less, not more, so I don't know what DTC is up to.

Mick is Shirley's favourite son I think. I really hope we will see some more development between Shirley and Dean but I've been disappointed with her recent scenes with Dean. She doesn't seem to want to spend time with him

I presume it's designed to make Dean even more bitter and twisted when the reveal happens. I found it very strange that Mick is willing to stick his dad under the shower over the drowning incident but didn't say a word when he finds out its Shirley?

She said she didn't want Dean to leave again but nor did she want Mick and his family to lose the pub. Stan is playing her boys off against each other and she's trying to minimise the damage.

I think Shirley does want a relationship with Dean, I don't think she likes Stan's relationship with him tbh and that's where some of the resentment is directed.
Shirley said in the last episode that she wanted Dean to stay but she didn't want Mick to be in debt. Stan is evidently manipulating the situation with Shirley/Mick/Dean and that's why he wanted the money back. I did think we would get a Stan/Shirley scene after the reveal actually. I want to see more of nasty Stan! |

Shirley is really selfish as she doesn't give a damn about Dean.

I agree about her change in attitude towards Dean. Last night it was like she was giving him evils!

He was angry at Stan Carter for lying to him, (I half suspect he thought it might be him himself.) |

I actually feel that in her ideal world Shirley would like great relationships with both Mick and Dean. But its Stan twisting the situation to make her chose because like she said she wants Dean to stay but not Mick to be in debt because of it. And i'd guess she'd feel the same way if the roles were reversed.

I think that was directed at Stan not Dean.

Has it been confirmed that Shirley is Mick's mother, or is it just that we've inferred it from the onscreen clues so far?
What clues have we seen? |

Ideally I think she wants a good relationship with both, as said above. Stan is definitely pulling the strings and playing puppet master with Shirley/Mick/Dean.

What clues have we seen? Phil's face after he explained "her boy" only wanted an apology. He believed she meant Dean, she actually meant Mick. |

Completely agree, she would rather go down the easy route of being adored and loved than try and make things work with Dean. One minute she wants a relationship with Dean, the next it's all about Mick.
First she was the one doing the blackmailing, forcing them to put her name above the door otherwise she wouldn't give the money, it's like Mick hasn't been her son until the bath incident reveal. |

I thought it was directed at least a bit at Dean, but she definitely has given him the cold shoulder in the last week. Of course, that is because of Stan.

I disagree, I think it has been played very subtly for awhile that she was maternal towards Mick, otherwise no one would have questioned her being his mum before the reveal. |

I think the reason she used the money Stan gave to get her name over the door was so that she had some stability after what Stan said about her not fitting in with Mick and that she wasn't part of the family. So although she went about it the wrong way, there was a reasoning.

I think some of you could be right about Stan playing Mick and Dean off each other, forcing Shirley to choose. Stan is obviously manipulative but I just want to know why Shirley hates him so much!

I agree, I've thought she has more of a maternal bomd with Mick for a while now. All the same, it still feels like she's only started being Mick's mum, rather than sister, since the audience discovered it. She's noticeably changed since the reveal, IMO.

I like the Stan and Shirley scenes because that is when Stan's nasty streak appears, I want to find out more about Stan and Shirley's hatred of him. Now that the secret has been revealed to the audience, I think we will find out more. |

How on earth can Mick be Shirley's son, what age is she, about 50, if she is that? I always felt that casting Danny Dyer as the father of kids in their 20's was stupid, he looks way too young IMO. Now we are supposed to believe that Shirley is his mother, when there must only be 11/12 years between them.

It seems to be the case in EE, that nearly everyone has their kids while they are school age. Carol and David had Bianca when they were about 14, even Peggy and Pat were 15/16 year old Mums, Max and Bradley, wasn't much between them in age, and Mo being Kat's Granny when there is only about 30 years between them. Too far fetched that everyone seemed to be a teenage Mum or Dad, common nowadays, but not so years ago.
