Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse V Loved Me Back to Life
So Mariah has released her new album, and Celine launched her new album at the end of 2013.
Celine sold 77k in the USA, and Mariah is projected to shift 55k copies. Why has Mariah not matched Celine? They normally perform the same. I love LMBTL, but MIAM just does not catch my attention the way previous albums have done. Celine and Mariah are two legends, but are they past it? |

Celine is still drawing audiences worldwide, her last french album was acclaimed and a success and her last english album has sold more than Kylie, Madonna or Gaga or even Miley have in the UK so she definitely isn't past it.
Mariah, I really like her latest album, but I don't see her matching the success of Celine's latest album as it doesn't really offer much new or different to what Mariah had previously done. Loved me Back to Life showed a different side to Celine in the way she sang whilst still delivering a sound that her main fanbase wants to hear. |

I think the most important thing here is that Celine hadn't released an album for 6 years so a of course her fan base was hungry for it. Mariah has released 2 studio albums and a Christmas album in that same time period as well as various singles.

I agree that might have been a factor, but it could have gone the other way, like happened to Nelly Furtado. I think with Celine also the six year gap also meant that the end result was of a great quality, I think I'm right in saying it's got her highest english album score on metacritic.

Mariah's is the best
Celine's vocals and the production on half the album were not her finest at all. Plus she scrapped the majority of the album for different material and I think the original stuff would of been more celine. |

I'd have to say Mariah. I commend Celine for trying something new but I don't think it works that well, I think it seemed like an attempt to fit in with current pop trends yet still unwilling to leave her own artistry behind.
The Elusive Chanteuse is easily Mariah's best album since Emancipation of Mimi, and the reviews reflect that. I don't think it's selling well because of the almost two year delay and the fact her sound is now completely non-existent in the charts. The songs on it sound very Mariah, and would sit well on all of her album. A song like 'Cry' would be number 1 if this was 1995, but alas trends are different now. Good on Mariah for staying true to the music she likes, though. |

Mariah hasn't had a good album since the mid-2000's so it's no surprise to me, the quality of her albums just get worser and worser with each release.

Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse, could sell around 55,000 to 60,000 copies in the week ending June 1 (according to industry forecasters), for a possible start at No. 3. That would mark Carey's lowest sales debut for a non-holiday studio album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. Her previous low came when 1991's Emotions launched at No. 4 with 156,000, according to SoundScan.
