I thought Michael French signed a 1 year contract which meant he shouldn't have left until the autumn but tonight his exit was weird, it just came out of nowhere and seemed very last minute.

When he written out of the show or did Michael French ask for early leave?

It was very odd. I knew he was leaving but didn't expect it to be this quick.

Maybe he asked to get out of his contract and that's why his exit was so instant.

It was always going to be a short stint DTC said as Michael never wanted to commit to it. Saw it coming though because it is a bit full on and David was a regular character, appearing in nearly every episode for the last couple of months. I don't think DTC would have axed him, David was a ratings hit.

Maybe he decided his character wasn't doing much so asked for early leave.

I heard that his initial contract was shorter than the stint he did and only stayed after DTC persueded him to stay on a while longer.

He was probably on a sixth month contract and they extended it by a couple of months

He was supposed to leave at Christmas doing a runner with Janine's cash, he was basically brought back to aid her exit from the show but DTC talked him into staying an extra six months. Worked out well really.

They would be very foolish indeed to axe David Wicks, one of the best, if not THE best EE character ever.

DTC has more sense than to kill him off at least, unlike the fool that killed off Pat.

Good post. Agree with all that. I bet they begged him to stay.

I'm pretty sure it was. They announced a couple of weeks ago that he was leaving and they had already shot his final scenes and that seemed like a fairly definate departure to me - especially with the Julia's theme.

To the OP - I don't think it was ever stated he was on a years contract - just that he was back for a limited contract - I think people maybe assumed it was a year as that tends to be the shortest.

As mentioned, he was brought back for Janine's exit but then agreed to stay on a few extra months for the Carol Cancer plotline. It was never going to be longterm.

I honestly can't imagine why any Producer would axe a character or actor as good as David and French. Especially as his return has generally been very well received - both with viewers that remembered him from first time round and new ones.

Pretty much in agreement with all this - sums it up well, tbh.

Thank god his heart attack didn't kill him off - and the door is still wide open for a future and hopefully, swift return.

Cannot imagine that any producer would ever axe David - they'd leave the door wide open - he's a very significant, important and popular character, even though David isn't always particularly likeable and can be difficult, at times - that is all just a part of his charm.

Will miss him tbh, but the show will continue without him, obviously.

Yeah right - until the ratings demand a return. The rule with soaps (or at least this one) is increasingly "Unless the character has been killed off, he/she will be back within 5 years". I was annoyed that they brought Stacey back after she got the Julia's Theme (or whichever theme it was) - it basically means nothing these days.

Have those who love David actually seen any of his original three year stint in the 90s?

David was a shadow of the great character he was then. You could argue that he mellowed with age but the scripts he had to work with were too dire to make any character growth believable.

I don't blame Michael for leaving so soon I'm positive it was 90% to do with the awful material he was being handed.

It can be the end,of a story rather than just an exit.. Remember Jane leaving for maternity leave getting one lol

Yes I have. He was my favourite character back then and remains a favourite now. I am slightly skeptical about the loves of each others lives thing they did with Carol and David but his characterisation has not disappointed me at all. I can totally believe it is the same man, just 20 years older. People do change in some ways (edges come off) whilst basically remaining the same and I think that is the case with David.
