Back in the day Kylie and Dannii started the trend of the singing soapstar. More than twenty five years later they are still the most successful. Spurned on by their success we had countless others jump on the bandwagon from Martine McCutcheon to Holly Valance. Who else can we remember and why did this trend stop?

Noooo, Eileen scrapped her recordings and decided to go in a dubstep direction.

and remember Sophie Lawrence who played Frank Butcher's daughter and Adam Rickett who I believe was Nick Tilsley's first head transplant? They both had short lived and best forgotten pop careers

Danielle Minogue was a child actor in soaps like The Sullivans and Skyways, but was best known to Australians as a singer on television series Young Talent Time (1981-1988). With Tina Arena she was one of the longer serving and better known regulars.

Dannii's subsequent role in Home and Away was only for one year.

So to Australians she's more a singer (using loose definition of the term some might argue).

But soap stars trying to launch pop singing careers is nothing new. Joe Hasham who played the longest running gay character in Australian soap Number 96 (1972-1977) tried to launch a singing career with single and an album in 1975 but his pop career failed to pan out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSpbSVrdQhA

His co-star Abigail had a 1973 hit with a sexy cover of Je T'aime http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncf7wUvj5So but later releases fizzled.

Peter Regan from soap 'The Box' released an album in the mid 1970s. http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/peter_regan

Pat McDonald and Ron Shand of Number 96 released an album of duets. http://www.quicksales.com.au/ad/ron-...ed-way/2957548

The Executives and Chelsea Brown recorded songs for album Number 96: Party Music. http://www.discogs.com/Various-Numbe...elease/4101927

Deborah Grey who showed the most full frontal nudity of anyone on Number 96 later released disco cover Mellow Lovin'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC1-ttHUlmY

In the 1980s Neighbours actors Stefan Dennis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trfYjucLGj0 and Gayle and Gillian Blakeney http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftHdwT-Zq90 released pop singles (Gayle and Gillian had already mimed in video clips like Singing in the 80s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJMbx_L5XJA ).

Melissa released two hit singles (Read My Lips - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcoJM9Jhcjo; Sexy is the Word - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoMqALaIgNQ) that were publicised through the soap she acted in: E Street.

Shona McGarty (Whitney in EastEnders) sings. She has(or had, I saw it ages ago) her own YouTube channel in which she posts clips of herself singing, and she sang for Children in Need a couple of years ago didn't she. Hasn't released anything though/

Ha ha thanks.

The UK seems to have had fewer of them. There was EE's Hattie (Michelle Gayle) of course.

At the time that "You'll Never Stop Me Loving You" hit, I was under the impression that Sonia was a popular TV actor who then recorded a SAW track. But it seems she had just been an extra on Brookside, and appeared in just one episode of Bread.
