Hi,

I've been trying to help a family member who has entered a SIM only contract with Vectone this week. The sim does not work in her phone and so she wants to get out.

When we contact Vectone customer service they do not seem to understand the request. They ask for a mobile number which we do not have because you need to get the Sim card to work in the phone first.

I've been told three times someone will call me back in 5 minutes. No one does. I ring back and speak to the same advisor who acts clueless about what I say.

The direct debit does not yet appear on my online banking either. I'm clueless how to stop it.

It sounds like you they check the phone was unlocked first, you can always get the person to get their phone unlocked by paying the existing provider to do so.

The distance selling regulations can normally help as you have 14 days to reject the goods or cancel, unfortunately there's a clause that says where the service has begun (which the provider would have enabled) and as long as they put that you're waiving your rights under the distance selling act in the contract then you don't get that protection.

Deal with it in writing by emailing them or writing to them, at least then you have proof of asking them to end the contract. Surely there must be another phone that the sim can be put in to find the number? or it should be printed on the pack the sim came with.

Hmm, well the phone is second hand and only purchased this week.

It came with the T-Mobile sim which it originally ran off. Would T-Mobile unlock it even though it's now a PAYG sim?

T-Mobile (the whole EE group) are probably the worst to deal with for unlocking, you will have to have used the phone for at least 6 months (or get the ex-owner to request it if they used it for at least 6 months) and the account has to be in good standing. It will cost £20.42 to be done and take anything up to 2 months to actually get done (if they will do it at all) after they accept the request

If she signed up to Virgin (which I think works in that phone) would they be able to unlock it after a certain period or is it exclusively T-Mobile/EE?

Agreed. In Orange's case, you have to have the original owner around to get Orange to unlock the phone.

A friend bought an Orange-locked phone off Ebay and couldn't get it unlocked. So I helped out, but no luck. If I remember correctly, the original owner has to state his/her name, street address, mobile phone number and all details associated with the account before Orange would unlock the phone. If the original owner isn't around to provide the details, the phone will remain locked to Orange.

We tried to get various people at Orange to bypass the original-owner issue, but none would budge. He still could use the phone, but he didn't like Orange so he sold the phone to an Orange user.

Put the make and model in here http://giffgaff.com/unlock

It gives you details of which companies can unlock your phone.
