I recall it being kicked to pieces right across the board prior to him coming in. Des Barnes with his ready made family, Deirdre and her broken glasses getting a storyline, Gail and her new haircut getting a storyline. So something drastic needed to be done, and he dragged it kicking and screaming in to the nineties which it was crying out for. For instance it has to be said the show having no significant black characters up to that point - that I recall, others by all means remind me - was shameful.
That being said he didn't half make some dreadful mistakes - Sam(?) the barmaid neing the biggest, but overall he probably did what was needed. |

Wasn't there a black seamstress who went out with curly in the 80s? I recall there being a hoo ha about it.

The show was stuck in a time warp and nothing was happening. The whole new Labour/Cool Britannia vibe had transformed the 90s but Corrie was a show still back in the dark ages. It no longer reflected what working Britain was. It needed to change. |

Hmm. I fear Corrie has once again settled back into its own world over the last few years. It needs a refreshed production team who can keep the much-needed links to the past but also drag the show kicking and screaming into 2014. It's not hard to find a good balance between the past and now. I watched a 1990s episode on YouTube recently and it threw me how "real" it still feels all these years later. Corrie just doesn't feel true to life as it once did. (I'm 20 by the way, not 90.
)I'm first and foremost a Corrie fan but have been following EastEnders lately. Their new producer clearly loves the show and what it stands for, and is bringing it back to health after the last two producers practically ripped the show apart. Where is Corrie's DTC?

Really? A hoo ha about it? Wow! I did see an old episode my dad had on video once that made me rewind it about ten times. A speech from Jerry, a comic character of the time from around 1978, trying to pursuade someone to come to the pub with him. 'Well come on. Mrs Walkers going to chuck all the foreigners out and we're going to have ourselves a knees-up.'
Thank God days like that are over....or not sadly. |
