I was looking for a new MP3 player when I'm running outside ( i have a nexus 5) but since I use spotify a lot, I was wondering if anyone was using a cheap small android phone simply as a spotify player via wifi (for downloading while at home onto device)?

Defends the object of it being cheap? - especially if you want to have a lot of off-line storage - that is why I was thinking a cheap android phone with large SD support would be better.

I want something I've frankly not bothered gets destroyed.

You can get a 1st, or even 2nd gen ipod touch real cheap 2nd hand these days. Ideal if you just want it for running etc. Picked up a 32GB one for £30 the other day off eBay.
