Strange wifi problem
I have a wireless access point (an Edimax 4515) which I can connect to with no problem with any number of laptops (both Windows and Mac OS X). However, I cannot connect any Android or IOS devices (I get "unable to connect" or similar). Any suggestions ?

If your router has a WPS button that is worth a try. Go to the phone settings, wifi and press the left soft key to reveal the phone's WPS facility. Start the router WPS and select the feature in the phone. Hope that solves the issue.
However, panic over, I was being stupid. There are 10 wifi hotspots on the network and the other 9 are fine, but this particular one had never been changed from a previous password. All the laptops I tried just happened to have previously been used on this one, but none of the mobile devices. 2+2 = 5
