Hey,

Looking for a fantastic picture LCD TV 40 / 42 inch, full HD, Smart TV not interested in 3D for around £400.

Any recommendations?

For the price range think it would be a Samsung or LG, and choice maybe somewhat limited. Under that budget will probably mean a Vestel set, which are not renowned for a quality picture.

Though Currys have a Panasonic 42" at £429.00 or a Sony 40" at £449.00, probably the best brands to go for, but don't know how good these models are.

That's a very cheap price for the 40F6500 and a 5 year warranty thrown in. I'd 'phone them and see what it covers though, it almost sounds too good to be true and I've never heard of the retailer, Perfect Visions.

For the same price you could consider the Which? Best Buy Samsung UE40F6320 here on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-UE40.../dp/B00ELAQD5Q

Also have a look at Richer Sound Clearance offers. You can't buy online but your local stores might have a bargain. The products change every week: http://www.richersounds.com/clearance

I did some checking, and it seems Perfect Visions are best avoided.

Currys have the 6400, which I believe is the same panel.

I've seen one running and it does have a great picture.

No 3D with lower motion processing.

Currys have the LG42LA620V for £448. Seems a decent spec for the price.

I know it's only a small sample, but I've been very unimpressed by Samsung televisions owned by people I know. My sister's has a terribly unnatural picture and the trouble is that there are very few controls available to try to improve it.

A brand new 50" (or perhaps even bigger) Samsung TV has feint blocks visible around the screen where on certain backgrounds they show up as being very slightly paler. there is also far more motion blur during football matches than on my much older Toshiba. It doesn't seem to bother the owner, but I wouldn't be too happy with it for the price.

Yeah ive stopped considering Samsung and Sony due to the PVA screens, my next TV is going to be either an IPS panel from Panasonic or LG, or i might grab a cheapie plasma for the world cup.

I've got a Samsung 6500, and the picture is excellent, with no trace of motion blur.

There is a stack of adjustment available on the 6500 - if adjustment appears limited, it could be because the picture control is set to 'dynamic'.

The best thing the OP can do is to go and see some sets running - Samsung and LG are often seen as a third choice on this board, which is in contrast to most of the reviews available over the Internet (which of course might be labelled as spurious by some people )

LG and Samsung are at the leading edge of panel development, and the Samsung 4K panels stand out from the rest. View a Samsung 4K panel alongside the Sony equivalent, and the difference is quite surprising.

I would suggest you go and compare the pictures rather than make a decision based on what panel type you think might be fitted.

I've found a Samsung 40" F6500 for 495.00 (after 10% discount for a new customer) if you're interested - this time I can recommend the company from personal experience, i.e. very good to deal with. I’ve purchased a tablet and a camera from them, and they are excellent on customer service as well as vfm.

Also comes with 3 months interest free credit, i.e. pay by 3 instalments within that period. Which may be helpful if you’re stretching the budget.

These sets were selling for over 800 pounds 18 months ago. Samsung bring out endless model updates, but the panels and the main tech generally stays the same until the range ends.

It has a great picture, very good sound for a flat panel TV (Dolby), and excellent green credentials, i.e. 50 wph – less in energy saving mode.

Full spec Smart TV with 3D, and Freesat - really good performance in SD, HD, and 3D.

I highly recommend it.

Right I thought I was going for the Samsunf H6400, but now I've been shown the H6500. What's the difference and what should I go for?

I have - and the Sony is much better.

Some comparison here...

http://www.digitalversus.com/tv-tele...es-n32979.html

There is some very odd information around about this new range - one example being that the 32" is being sold for more than the 40".

If you're not in a hurry, the F6500 may take quite a tumble in price soon. It has a dual core processor, rather than quad core as the H range, but if you use the hub in a Skybox, any advantage may be limited.

The reviews I've seen on the F6400 and H6400 are showing some different results, one are being the motion management on the new H model being described as: "all over the place".

Currys have got the 40" H6400 up for 449, claiming they've reduced it from 849 - they do tend to spout a lot of rubbish, but that seems excessive even for them.

My advice is to make sure you see some reviews on this new H up-grade model, and go and look for yourself, because although the spec is slightly higher than the F, it doesn't seem to be getting the same praise as the F range on a number of points.

The F6500 is well tried and tested and got very good reviews from a number of the main review sites, and if you don't need the faster hub for downloading (as you say in your original post), and you're not in a hurry, waiting to see what happens to the price of the F6500 might get you a bargain that possibly has a better picture too.

We bought a 42" lg(lg ln575v) smart tv back in Jan this year and it's brilliant, great picture quality connected to our sky HD box, sound is surprisingly good for a thin tv, it's also got a very thin bezel too which I like. When your watching HD content it looks like a picture floating on the wall. We don't really need the smart features as we have a PS4 but it's very good when I tried it. Not had a single issue in the 6 months we've owned it.

Richer Sounds have got the 40"H6400 available to buy on line at 449 with a 5 yr warranty included (subject to signing up to their VIP weekly email on their site) They are showing two customer reviews giving it 5 stars and well pleased with it.

If you buy online you will be able to return it to a branch of Richers within 7 days if not happy with it.

The 32" model with the same spec is 479, at Richers and JL, which seems odd - I'm wondering if Currys have made a mistake and Richers and JL have price matched them on the 40 inch.

The same set at DABs is 600, and 521 on Amazon.

I've had a search around, and there are not many F6500's about - and they've gone from JL's site, who have had them for the last 18 months.

With a quad processor and 400hz CMR, the H6400 on paper is a very good buy.

There seems little difference between the H6400 and H6500, nothing worth paying an extra 100 for imo.

Richers are very good to deal with, so if you want to see for yourself in the comfort of your home (where they always look better anyway) they've got them in stock now at the above price.

It's the same price (£449) at John Lewis and you don't have to sign up for anything to get the 5 year gtee. Out of stock at the moment so must be poplular.

On June 13th the 7 day return limit is going to be upped to 14 calendar days and other changes as well more beneficial for the customer, due to the Distance Selling Regs being scrapped and replaced with the Consumer Contract Regs. I was wondering whether to start a thread in GD to advise people but I doubt anyone will pay any attention anyway.

Here's 2 links about it. The first one is an easy to grasp summary in table form I eventually found, and the second is the full letter of the law from Trading Standards.

Signing up to the Richer Sounds VIP weekly news letter is a sales thing, I doubt they will insist on it.

I get it because I like to keep up with their latest deals, and they give money off vouchers from time to time. It's no big deal, and can be stopped at any time.

Richers are very good on after-sales, and will bend over backwards to keep customers happy, and their staff generally tend to be more knowledgeable than JL.

I bought my TV from JL last year, and having needed to contact them, the after-sales service has been terrible. The front line staff seem clueless. I was promised call-backs on 3 occasions which didn't happen. When I made a complaint, they just blamed each others departments.

When looking at TV's in JL last year I asked the sales assistant about OLED screens, and she hadn't hear of them. She asked her supervisor, and she hadn't heard of it either, saying: “I’ll have to read up on this”. Which I hope she did, because about six weeks later JL were explaining OLED on their website.

Next time I buy a TV, Richer's will be my first port of call.
