The funny thing is that at 09:00, the audience jumped from 169k (3.0%) to 250k (4.2%) as a result of BBC Breakfast finishing. Moving the show to 09:00 and putting it head-to-head with Marr would make a big difference to its number and share in my view.

In fact, looking at the breakdown in front of me...

06:00 - CITV
08:50 - ITV News
09:00 - Weekend
10:30 - May the Best House Win etc etc

Would be much, much better. 529k (7.6%) were watching a repeat of 'May The Best House Win' in the five-minutes from 10:15, for anyone wondering how I reached the above conclusion. Numbers drop as soon as Murder, She Wrote come on back to ~300k.

Weekend may be rating low, but on the other hand, the slot is extremely stupid.

I expected higher shares than that for that 2am game though, what on earth are people watching in the middle of the night?!

The fact that weekend is an ITV Breakfast thing, and you can't have programmes going across 9:25 would be the issue.

BBC1 - 43pct [37pct excluding England game]
Itv - 30pct

A big win so far for the Beeb.


It probably would've got a share of around 40pct on BBC1. But due to inferior weekly reach, it turned out to be around 30pct on Itv.

So both the Thursday launch and Sunday highlights finished up y-o-y when all the data was in.

The official series average after 4 episodes stands at 1.94M compared to 2.08M at the same point last series. Puts into perspective a lot of the absolute crap that gets written, although we know from the overnights this gap will widen a bit more.

It was a great episode plus you probably missed the surprise return as well.

Fantastic rating.

I'm pleased someone picked out the least unlikely part of that statement.

If England got far enough to play Germany in this World Cup the rating really would be out of this world. Here's hoping.

Two further examples of what I was saying - once people are hooked on the World Cup they'll watch anything, those games wouldn't get a tenth of those ratings outside of a tournament scenario. And - twitter klaxon - Iran v Nigeria is currently mirroring every other game so far in being the top twitter trend during the first half. I know twitter means little but it does at least suggest that there won't be quite the horrendous sudden drop in interest some seem to be expecting.

Interesting being close to Christmas-some kind of rival extravaganza to the Royal Variety Show.

Selling the adverts might be an issue as you are dealing with different sales houses, technically different channels, if the same programme aired on ITV regions regionally and ITV Breakfast nationally.

Murray doesn't usually get the BBC1 evening treatment until the 3rd round and then it often depends on how rubbish the planned schedule on BBC1 is.

Not quite Broadchurch levels but very impressive for Tuesday at 9.00. Great compelling stuff-especially the first four episodes which rank amongst the best tv drama Iv seen.

Yes it's been confirmed for BBC One. Three days before SPOTY, a slight shame they couldn't hold both on consecutive nights over a weekend.

Even if it chucks it down they'll just shut the roof on Centre (and they'll keep an eye on the forecast to shut it in advance if need be) so, unless it's one of the most amazing matches in Wimbledon history, it'll never make it to 6pm.

Good idea from the Beeb. If this first one rates well, hopefully it can be moved to Sundays from the following year on to take on XF final and derail it.

And of course this year the scheduling of his first-round match is dictated by tradition. Rain permitting he'll not play on middle Saturday this year - although I'm not sure how disappointed the BBC will be about that, given there is a possibility of England's only World Cup knockout-round match being played at 9pm that day.

If Happy Valley was a Monday drama it would have been a million higher. A good rating all the same for a gritty BBC1 drama.
