Rising Star bombed. Yes the timeslot was crap, but in fairness, the format restricted where it could be put in the schedules. When creating formats, you don't just have to think about the domestic appeal, but also the international appeal. In countries with multiple time zones (USA, Australia, China, Russia, Brazil etc...), it was always going to present problems, especially when the interactive vote is such an important part of the format.
The show itself last night was very slow; 3 acts in the first hour and a commercial break after every 6/7 minutes (I know US TV has loads of ads, but this was taking the pee). Josh Groban is a good host, but the panel (except Ludacris) were boring.”
I was sent a copy of the first episode of Rising Star USA a couple of hours ago from my American informant and have just finished analysing the first episode. It was a dire couple of hours. The problem with the format is that it's singers one after another, each singer taking about 8mins overall. It got very repetitive, slow and boring. At least with something like TXF and the Voice, the first few episodes are pre-recorded auditions so the pacing is quite fast. You dont get singer after singer after singer [each one 8mins long] on TVuK or XF, theres little montages and so on in between all of that to quicken up the pace. There was none of that with Rising Star, making the show laboured.
In addition to that, the production values are restricted by the wall. Because of the wall, you cant really have the singers owning the stage because theres no stage or space for them to move around anyway. The prodcution values was poor, the contestants cant interact with the crowd as they can with the Voice. Also the judges seats looked amateurish, either have a table full of the judges like XF or proper chairs like the Voice's. Rising Star's looked cheap.
But most importantly, the gimmick itself of live voting was a bit boring really. It mightve been quite exciting for the first couple of contestants, but after that, it didnt really make a difference at all to the show. In fact, having a big bar on screen on the right just restricted the production value and made the show look a big cheap and dated.
Overall, the BBC has nothing to worry about with Rising Star being a potential threat. The Voice and the Midwives will deal with Rising Star with ultimate ease. Also when Itv promote Rising Star for weeks if not months before hand, there will be huge media interest and pressure on the show to be good right from the off. Inevitably the show will not live up to the hype [as with 99% of shows which are hugely hyped] and the press reaction will be very bad, mark my words.
