Even more interesting given ITV's curious decision not to reinstate The Chase and instead show highlights of the earlier semi-final between Djokovic and Gulbis. I think it will get less than a million viewers, a distant third behind BBC One and BBC Two in the 17:15-18:00 slot. Possibly even fifth behind Come Dine with Me and 5 News / Neighbours.

Having read the book I wouldn't have thought they'd be penciling this one in for Christmas - not sure it would sit well in the schedule at that time of year.


I didn't think it was very good at all. And the success of Happy Valley ought to show it doesn't matter what time of year it's airing at. If it's good, people will watch.

I think that's fair to say of the soaps as well. The sharpness of this prime time drama as we head toward the summer highlights how that serial drama seems to be written with crayola and the quality actors given as much rehersal time and space as a school play.

Yes. I wouldn't call that decent for Corri considering its out of slots episodes last week where getting over 8mil. Shows BGT was a big help there even though that wasn't doing to great neither.

It will be interesting to see how the BBC local news programmes did tonight at 7 pm against Emmerdale. I think the BBC will have had high ratings all day and at 6.30 thanks to their splendid D Day coverage.

What did ITV do special for D Day anniversary? Was it just normal news shows?

Bar the news today what did they do?

What the point? Doing the same coverage other than news would be foolish, everyone turns over to BBC1. The BBC are a publicly funded broadcaster and so should be doing tis type of coverage, commercial channels are different and so shouldn't be put into the same boat just to have a bash. They featured it on GMB, This Morning, News etc.

What did Ch4 do? What did Ch5 do?


The doc on last night should have been on tonight instead of after the news, although I imagine most will have has their fill on BBC1.

The local news has clashed with Emmerdale before in the last couple of years but I cannot find out when. From memory I think it was pretty close between the two.

BBC One was the only channel out of the 'terrestrial' five to have anything special during the day and BBC Two has an hour long show tonight recapping the day and a documentary on the landings at 9.30pm.

I'm not even going to start asking why ITV didn't air If I Don't Come Home at 9pm either yesterday or today instead of the Giggs rubbish (the Soccer Aid preview could have been moved to Thursday if need be). Another piece of poor scheduling from the broadcaster.

Pretty sure the 2nd launch will go sub 2m tonight, the reaction online didn't seem too positive, however the sneak peak of the 6 tonight.. looks like they have left the most normal, likeable but interesting ones for tonight.

So when you look at the overall figures none of the channels have done well and have all lost in these demos.

BBC One (potentially), BBC Two and ITV have stronger programming on tonight and 8 Out of 10 Cats could easily perform better than the Comedy Gala so Big Brother has it tougher this evening than yesterday; especially as yesterday was the launch episode. I know they've split the launch but 'part two' doesn't tend to have the same pull.

Presumably during Wimbledon, and on occasions when Emmerdale is pushed early rather than the news pushed later.

Interesting that Cat Deeley is doing the Soccer Aid programme. It's her now only thing she does on British TV, once every two years!

Thank you, whilst the BBC is the main PSB broadcaster, I think on such an important anniversary ITV could have fine something, even replacing the repeats in the afternoon, or as you say put that documentary into Primetime.

The national newspapers all led on it and were respectful, ITV seems to have ignored it and left it to the same length news shows.


Maybe we will see tomorrow and the ratings if people thought the BBC view and coverage was the best thing yo see out of respect.

Most was when people like me were at work so it's not going yo be high ratings.

It's being suggested elsewhere that 1984 was the last time ITV did anything special on D Day. I guess they took the view they could not compete with the BBC (which seems to be their view on most major events these days, they dropped out of the Olympics after Seoul in 1988).

Channel 4 and Channel 5 'ignored' it as well. Though I don't think 'ignored' it is the right word; I'm sure they had coverage during their normal programming - they just didn't run a show which would have basically been a simulcast of BBC One's coverage.

I don't blame them for not airing anything during the day as, as ftv says, they just get thrashed by the BBC anyway but I do agree they could have aired something in primetime. The Giggs documentary had ITV4 written all over it and really didn't need a ITV(1) showing.

JK Rowling novel to be TV drama
Having already featured in the Harry Potter films, Bafta-winning actor Michael Gambon has signed up for another JK Rowling adaptation.

He will appear in the BBC One version of her novel The Casual Vacancy, which will be produced with American broadcaster HBO.

The three-part series is based on the author's first grown-up work since the best-selling Potter saga.

It centres on the fictional English village of Pagford, whose idyllic façade contradicts the tensions among the population.


W1A's Rufus Jones and Monica Dolan are in the cast Gambon will play delicatessen owner Howard Mollison and will be joined by a cast including Keeley Hawes, Rory Kinnear and Julia McKenzie.

Monica Dolan and Rufus Jones will also feature in the mini-series. The former played a BBC press officer in comedy W1A, with Jones portraying a hapless entertainment producer.

The drama will also feature Waterloo Road actress Keeley Forsyth, who will appear alongside newcomer Abigail Lawrie as her daughter Krystal.

The Casual Vacancy has sold more than six million copies worldwide since its 2012 release.
