I think they should split it as it works really well ending the first half on a big cliffhanger. The last few have been written as such, the Beeb just haven't split them and don't seem interested in doing so as long as Downton is in the schedule.

This year's looks like it'll be one of those reveals that EastEnders does so well. It was revealed to us in late May so that's 7 months build up. The ideal scenario would be for it to be split in two with the reveal at the end of the 1st episode ala Stax but it probably won't be.
Agree about the omnibus, it should be on BBC Two over the weekend or axed altogether.
