Its ratings didnt quite deliver. Was supposed to be a mainstream drama, expensive with a large ensemble cast. Launched with over 6million but couldnt sustain its audience. Best to get rid of it and invest the money into another quality drama which will get the ratings. A good decision by the Beeb.

Last year's equivalent BOTS had 744k (5.8%) / 845k (6.6%). I don't have last night's +1 figure to hand but it looks like the +1-included rating just fell short of last year's.

It seemed to me that the D Day commemorations took place today ie now. You can excuse it all you like its a wrong call and disrespectful.

That has to be one of the barmier desicisions the BBC has ever made. Critically acclaimed and very good ratings - complete numpties.

This was supposed to be a big drama for the Beeb. Well trailed, landmark drama involving a well known ensemble cast and an expensive set. However most of the episodes rated below 5million in the overnights and lost out to plodding Itv drama Vera. It's not good enough. The BBC are most concerned about ratings when it comes to BBC One drama. Even if the quality is good, if the ratings are not up to scratch [especially in the Sunday 9pm slot], it's time for the chop. The money saved from its cancellation will be reinvested into more quality drama next year which potentially could rate millions better than Sarah Phelps' underperformer. The BBC are not like Itv, there are high expectations and even shows rating around the 5m overnight mark can be axed. Itv may be happy to keep sub 5m shows around like Mr Selfridge, but the Beeb has higher ratings aspirations and have to make these tough decisions.

Just because BBC1 decide to run full coverage doesn't mean ITV have to do as well. The days of the 2 main channels offering identical coverage of every news event are long gone, particularly as we now have news channels as well which also offered full coverage which we didn't have in the eras people are harking back to.

ITV will pick and choose just the most major events to cover these days. Without being disrespectful, today's event wasn't one of those major events, these would be limited to a royal event, election or major breaking news story.

Of course the real reason people are bemoaning the lack of ITV coverage is because they are missing out on the predictable circus of posts. People here tune in for 2 seconds and then immediately brand the entire broadcast as poor quality, then people proudly saying that they are 'sticking with the BBC', and then when the rating comes out, gloating that BBC1 beat ITV many times to 1.”

So predictable.

Stupid decision, really stupid. It was a great drama, better than CTM in fact. It wasn't even rating that badly anyway. It seems more like ratings chasing.

I'm sure this was supposed to be another big BBC drama hit, with all the ingredients to be one, or so we were told.

The Crimson Field officials were all over 6m and it averaged around 6.5m.
The Village was recommissioned on lower figures than that or need I mention Atlantis/Musketeers which were both much lower and got another series. Completely baffling decision.

They had coverage, every news bulletin featured it throughout the day, what more do they need. If they were being disrespectful then they would completely ignored it, but they didn't.

Perhaps we should have had Ch4, Ch5 and some multichannel's clear their schedules for the same coverage? The BBC is covering what is a requirement for them and ITV is covering it the news. How much coverage do viewers want to watch? They've paid they're respects.

The BBC actually put in a bid for The French Open according to Broadcast.

It is nowadays due the amount of choice. I think the Royal Wedding figures might have been the straw that broke the camel's back, as it were. Yes, they simulcast the Euro and World Cup final but that's because of the demos.

ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 all have PSB obligations. All decided against rolling coverage of the commemorations because it wouldn't be beneficial to them, as bad as that might sound or seem.

I can't believe this! It rated better than quite a few BBC1 dramas. This is nuts!

And because the coverage would look incomplete if they didn't. Imagine if ITV Sport signed off after the semi-final, would look daft.

Every episode over 6m in the consolidated ratings. This is just ridiculous.

And The Musketeers average was inflated by the episode 1 rating. No wonder the people on The Crimson Field are pissed!

Who posted the drama series averages? I'm trying to find them. Would be good to post them again then you can see why it is madness to axe The Crimson Field.

EDIT: Found it.

I really do hope you're on a wind-up, because otherwise this is the saddest, most tragic post I've ever read.

ITV is a television channel, Andy. Nothing more, nothing less.

Much hyped - tick

Did I really see a programme listed on ITV last night dedicated to saying goodbye to a fictional character in a soap?
