I didn't expect a higher figure than that because of good weather in the early evening. People were watching at pubs in beer gardens or outdoors.

As Mike Teevee said, ITV ran for 10 minutes longer than the BBC coverage.

A stat from Samuel.
"BBC beat ITV by 4.2 to 1 yesterday. This is ITV's smallest margin of defeat for World Cup final since 1998!" |

Its a wonder anyone watches ITV at all. The unpopular Adrian Chiles on ITV and the ad free BBC on the other side. The BBC is already one step ahead on ITV.
However despite only getting 2.9m I bet nothing else would have got higher than that if ITV didn't simulcast the final. I imagine they still made a profit. |

Unless something comes along later in the year, I think we can safely say that the World Cup is going to top the charts for the end of the year (well depending upon the NYE fireworks of course) |

I never understood the "itv" thing. It's not correct to write "itv". It's nearly as bad as $ky, it should off course be £ky because I have never seen the US dollar used as currency in the UK.
Oh Samuel, the only forum member who worsened my mental state, a feat matched only by my wife! http://www.itv.com/presscentre/ Is it just another case of 'forum knicker twisting', I think either 'itv' or 'ITV' is acceptable.

I assume when Germany scored the goal was the peak of the night.

Great finale. I thought it may come in slightly higher but nevertheless that's still 15M viewers over 4+ hours. Interesting that the BBC's margin of victory wasn't on quite the same level as it normally is, albeit still thoroughly convincing. Quote:

Last night's game was the most watched program in Germany history according to the BBC ;
A record 34.65m Germans watched Sunday's World Cup final win on national television. It beat the previous record of 32.57m set by the semi-final between Germany and Brazil. The number, which does not include the many millions who watched the match in bars and open-air public viewings, represents a market share of 86.3%, according to broadcast data figures. |

I don't understand why itv in wrong, they rebranded themselves as itv some time ago.

Tonight will be interesting, I wonder how many shows and channels will recover due to the end of the World Cup.
Utopia starts on CH4 at 10pm and people are expecting it to do very well, but didn't is barely get 1m for it's premiere last year? |

Of course you're all forgetting that Samuel used Itv, not ITV or itv.

It could be quiet by Monday's usual standards. The high of a big event like the World Cup final might make typical summer offerings look rather mundane by comparison. And it's not as if the soaps can be counted on to get bums on seats these days. |

Utopia is capable of rating well to a point but BB won't be worried about going up against it. Very different audiences generally speaking. If C4 was airing a young skewing documentary or Made in Chelsea was on E4, there would be more to be concerned about from BB's perspective.

Utopia at 1.2m, BB at 1.3-1.4m. The most impressive rating may come from Benefits Britain again on CH5. |

International World Cup ratings:
United Kingdom: BBC1 12.09m (50.3%), ITV 2.86m (12.1%) Germany: ARD 34.65m (86.3%) - new all-time record France: TF1 13.583m (61.3%) + BeIN Sports (unknown) Italy: RAI1 13.952m (56.71%) Spain: Telecinco 10.693m (64.9%) first 90 minutes; 12.691m (67.6%) extra time Netherlands: Ned1 5.937m (74.6%) Austria: ORF1 1.7m (54%) + ARD 0.5m This is a combined total of almost 96 million viewers in 7 countries. Can anyone provide figures for other countries? |

It could lose as many as 600,000 viewers I think. Long Lost Family is a very solid rater for itv and C4's Royal Marines documentary looks worth a watch. Bit different to last week when the commercial opposition was a low rated gameshow and a low rated documentary. |
