We watched it, it was wonderful. Despite some questionable science at times we are also enjoying Cloud Lab. Two great documentaries, especially for this time of year.

Since I didn't watch the opening Ceremony (Dancc would be glad to know I watched Chicago PD instead) I thought about reading the DS thread instead but then I recalled that the DS London Olympic Opening Ceremony thread was the only place that hated it and ripped it to shreds goodness knows what they made of last night heh.

The @Glasgow2014 #CommonwealthGames got under way with a peak of 9.42m/43.6% yesterday. The full programme averaged 7.59m/41.1% from 8pm.

Perfectly fine number and share.

I think that's a decent enough star. Had expected around 8m.

Great numbers considering the weather and holidays, and lack of hype and build up.

Wow I am genuinely stunned by CG ratings, I thought they would nose dive for sure. It was on for hours too

My take on the Opening Ceremony was that I never knew so much nothingness could last so long. The Scots were enjoying themselves and TCG are a good way to push your country into the limelight and celebrate it, nothing wrong with that. What I found more grating was the pretentious commentary. For one start, it felt that England was sidelined to a minor country by the Welsh and Scottish commentators, with Northern Ireland barely getting a mention. The whooping and the gushing over the welsh and Scottish teams were outrageous. For impartiality there should have been, at least for the teams entrances, been a view from an English (what happened to Gary Linekar?) and Northern Irish commentator.

The commentators saying "what I liked about the ceremony is that it wasn't self obssessed". It was one of the most self obssessed things I've ever seen. Nothing wrong in that, it's just pretentious of the commentators to say otherwise. The content of the opening ceremony was minimalistic and disjointed. Susan Boyle was awful. Absolutely awful. The baton thing was a copy of London 2012's torch bearers as they "encompasses the youth". Then when the baton refused to let go of the Queen's message just about summed up the whole affair, but the Queen's impromptu comedic response to the baton situation was TV Gold. It was one of the worst Opening ceremonies I've ever seen. Anywhere. It made the London 2012 Closing Ceremony look like Shakespeare in comparison.

LAck of Hype? you would have to be non British not to know the Commonwealths were starting last night.

It was excellent. Very sobering programme. Really showing how badly out actions are affecting the entire planet more-so than at an point in our history.

I said 40% share and 8m average, the naysayers on here were determined it ought fail. Manchester 2002 time shifted to 8.59m I believe.

Much better average than I expected and much better than it deserved. The breakdown will be interesting.

ITV's lowest 9pm ratings came during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of London 2012.

I seem to recall A Touch of Frost mustered 600k against 24 million on BBC 1 The reaction on here was very funny.

Shows how bad ITV ratings are at the moment as there only a million higher than that against 8m competition.

OK. I go further. Did anyone watch The CG preview on BBC Red Button yesterday? They had a Welsh athlete, a NI athlete, 2 Scottish athletes featured but not ONE English athlete featured. (In the #SeeYouInGlasgow segment). When Manchester had the CG, their opening ceremony embraced the UK in general, not just focusing on England. Considering the majority of the TV audience in this country is English, sidelining them is not wise! Why do feel the Welsh and Scottish feel sidelined? They have their own Governments so obviously they're going to feel detached slightly from England. It wasn't the Scots sidelining England, it was the BBC. The cheers from the stadium when all home nations entered was wonderful.

Just been confirmed that Mo Farah has pulled out of the Commonwealth Games. That could affect ratings when it comes to the athletics events.

Compared to last August this is much better for BBC1. ITV had lots of new programmes from September last year and I think that will be the same this year. I do think Bake Off is starting a couple of weeks too early. It'll be over before the bigger rating October. Also the spin off show on BBC2 on Friday will be up against Gogglebox in September.

And Usain Bolt only doing the relay will affect the athletics too.

What did they expect? It would be a poor reflection on the Olympic games if the greatest majority of people in the host country weren't watching. The Olympics is the greatest sporting event in the world. Seems immature to start picking on what was shown against it

Poor Mo. The problem for the CW games is that everything will be compared with the Olympics which is obviously the greatest athletic showcase on earth.

How the hell was I 'picking on' it? All I said was ITV got low ratings that night and the reaction on this thread was amusing.
