BBC1 took Bake Off because if its ratings. Would be embarrassing if it didn't rate much different to its last BBC2 series. Don't know if it will top last year's finale audience either.

My Australian source tells me that there has been huge ratings developments with their version of the XFactor so far this year. In previous years, XF Australia used to win its slot quite easily with audition episodes getting about 1.5million viewers. However this year, XF has struggled to rate over 1.1million with its figures down 30pct yoy and it has been beaten by shows including MasterChef, The Block, Nine News, Andy and Hamish etc. In fact, its latest episode saw it sink to a 4yr+ ratings low of only 914,000 viewers. Looks like after last year's XF failure in USA, the trend is continuing in Australia too with underwhelming ratings there for this series. Could this pattern be replicated here too?
Incidentally the Voice Australia auditions just a couple of months ago were hitting around 2million viewers, double the XF's. My source for Australian ratings (Dancc who kindly posts numbers here regularly) shows that the market is a bit mental. XF AU's decline is something of a surprise given its strong run in the past 2 years, it has posted some very poor numbers this year even since The Voice finished. But then again, we also saw a sudden massive bounce for Masterchef after years of decline. The UK doesn't tend to see such extreme changes, not being as competitive as Australia. Trying to draw comparisons between the UK and Australia is absurd given that XF has been on a hot streak out there in recent years while the UK show struggled. |

*A few tabloid might try to spin it that way, but they won't be taken seriously. |

I don't think I will rate particularly differently. They needed to put it on at another time of year if the expected that huge a uplift. I think it seemed to outgrow BBC TWO so they weren't allowed to play with it any more, but I think it will pretty much stay the same on BBC one if its not moved to a new season.

I want to see a show grow into a ratings monster again, similar to the dizzy levels X Factor reached in 2009 and 2010. Bake Off could be the next show to do this. Always like a big rating to gawp at

Do you mean with the first episode or at all? If the former then of course it won't, it isn't expected to and won't be deemed a failure if it doesn't*. Of course it it doesn't top it over the course of the series then the move will be questioned, and rightly so, but I think that's unlikely, even with it starting a whole two weeks before last year (which won't make as much difference as certain people are suggesting.)

I think it will, Bake Off has huge hype this time. The big BBC promo campaign and just anecdotally, everyone I know talks about it and we're students- It has a wide reach in terms of demo and having a big show front and centre in late summer is a great idea as there's nothing else to compete, especially in that Pre-Watershed 8pm slot (and to use an old Ratings Thread Cliche it also has the advantage of getting the OAPs in their seats after Corrie

Did anyone watch ITV excellent doc tonight The Pals Army at 10:15pm. Retelling the story of the war from the perspectives of the war veterans. This should have been in primetime at 9pm.

I think with the return of Simon and Cheryl and the inclusion of Mel b The X Factor will return to a 10m+ show. Depending on how strong the episodes are. I think both Doctor Who ( I really think this will be a return to form and I cannot wait) and The X Factor will both do well if opposite each other (with XF getting some big +1 audiences). Dr Who should be looking at 6m+ and XF 9.5m+, that is as long as ITV has supportive schedule around it.

Yeah probably, however I think now was as good a time as any to move it right into autumn. Likewise it annoys me that "Doctor Who" airs when the evenings are still light. It also should have been launched with "Strictly Come Dancing" as a package.

Does anyone have access to the rating for the documentary on ITV 'The Pals Army' at 10:15pm? Please.

Very rare for one network to win every single time slot. I think it may have happened (for BBC1) once or twice before?

BBC1 and ITV really can't be put in the same bracket any more, there's a huge gulf between them. |

More than it deserved, a horribly insipid and unimaginative end to what had otherwise been a greatly entertaining week and a half of high-class sport. Real shame.

In the last few weeks it has happened every weekend. There's very few slots during the week when BBC1 is beaten too - sometimes Jeremy Kyle, sometimes Tipping Point/The Chase and of course the soaps.
BBC1 and ITV really can't be put in the same bracket any more, there's a huge gulf between them. ITV's stance is typical of a business, but being a TV channel (and a major one) they should be putting so much more effort into the schedule all year round. Unfortunately they allow parts of the year to fall apart meaning the BBC don't even need to try. |

The closing ceremony was awful. Like a really bad school sportsday. Why all of those speeches? They'll never get The Olympics.
However if they did, why should we base it on the opening and closing ceremonies? Nobody can deny they put in a spectacular games which saw every single venue rammed full of excited spectators |

I hope so but I do worry about the feature-length aspect. Wouldn't bet against a shed of viewership during the slower parts, as we saw with Sherlock.

Has the runtime been confirmed, as "feature length" for DW can mean 70 to 75 mins?
EDIT: Sorry, after a quick google search it transpires BBFC are giving it a run time of 97 minutes. http://www.bbfc.co.uk/releases/docto...ep-breath-film You can give or take a few for the differences between cinema and television, as with the 50th, though. |
