As far as I can see, unlike ITV +1 and the such like, C5 +24 is not automatically bundled in as C5 and C5 +1, it is strictly a separate channel.

That really foes say it all. The timeshift jumped from episode 4.

It's not a conventional repeat as far as I'm concerned and if +1 is included for the purposes of a constructing an official series average, I see no harm in including this as well. It helps provide a comprehensive total for the show's main primetime screenings.

Realistically, nudging 5m is all EastEnders can expect when its entire episode is swallowed up by a head-started Emmerdale at this time of year. In the excitement over that, all the other soap ratings appear to have been forgotten.

And Big Brother's doing fine. If it's between 1.0 and 1.5m every night except Saturday, job done.

Nonsense. It is just going one step further to spin a result of a lacklustre show. So now we have to include figures from a previous day to get an idea of how many are watching a programme today? The news is virtually the same everyday, AND it's on the same time everyday. Shall we include yesterdays total to todays total? After all we are only trying to get a comprehensive total for its main primetime screening? What's next? BB 2013? Why don't we add those figures onto last nights overnights? It smacks of desperation that figures from a seperate channel that repeats a show 24 hours after original transmission is added onto the total of a show broadcast a whole day before.

Yeah we shouldnt be allowed to add +1 ratings or +24 ratings. Its actually not allowed according to independent data verifier BARB who strictly have separate tables for the +1 and +24 channels. Otherwise why dont we add all the iplayer ratings to the BBCs ratings to bump up their ratings?

I would agree with that as you could think of all sorts of anomolies with other channels.

There is timeshift in the overnights as well, up to 2am.


I wasn't commenting on its ratings, just its elongated gestation period before broadcast.

The hope of adding a few tens of thousands on just shows how relatively badly it is doing. It's time to pull the plug and just keep going with two CBB's per year. There aren't any new or original ideas, and its just dying a slow and horrible death despite a slight reprieve last year. 15 years is a good run, time to let it go. CBB and BB were always in the same ball park on Channel 4 (except the last CBB), one is now significantly lower than the other so that should tell them something.

There is a case to argue the inclusion of +1 because its on the same night, and BARB include anything up to 2am. +24 inclusion is a silly suggestion.

I have just about conceded about +1 additions because they are broadcast an hour later on the same day (although I still don't agree with it), but considering figures for a Sunday repeat of XF broadcast on the same channel less than 24 hours after broadcast are NOT included in the officials, then to include ratings from a +24 channel just to artificially inflate the ratings of a show is totally bonkers and should not be included - at all. Also, just because someone watches yesterdays BB on +24, that does not mean they will watch tonights tomorrow.

BARB displays ITV HD numbers separately on its website too, but we always include those. In their weekly tables BARB don't make a value judgement on what we are "allowed" to add together. They merely present the figures for each BARB-reported channel separately, except where (in the case of, say, BBC One, BBC Two, Channel 4 and Channel 5) the broadcaster opts to have the HD simulcast channel included in the main channel's figures.

The only area where you could say BARB make a judgement is the yearly chart of official top-rating programmes, where they opt to include HD but not +1. But I would expect this to change some time after BBC One +1 launches (subject to Trust approval, and from 8pm only) in September 2015, as almost every significant channel will then have a +1 (BBC Two being the main exception).

My tuppence on the topic is this.

If people argue that +1 should be added in because 'it is a timeshift channel', then for their argument to hold, they should accept that any timeshift channel should be included, be that +2, +3, +6.5342, +23, etc.

If people's argument is that +1 should be added in because 'these viewers watched on the same day' then any broadcast of a programme irrespective of the channel it is shown on (timeshift or not) should be added in.

For me, both of these arguments have flaws, hence why i fall back to simplest position....report the +1 (or +24 or+whatever) channels separately, albeit alongside the +0 channel. To me, it allows the most like for like comparison.......and for the time being at least It's what BARB does.

BARB dont include +1 in their End of Year Charts. They consider +1 as a separate channel and it is against the official BARB rules to include those viewers because it gives a false impression of the viewership. So the +24 channels defo should not be included, it's not even the same day and also it opens up a huge can of worms about whether online viewing should be included in the ratings.

So if and when BARB include BBC One +1 in the yearly chart, will that be acceptable in your view (as the playing field will be level for the top two market leaders)?

I don't think that's right, at 10pm there's a huge audience about who aren't interested in the news, it's exactly the kind of people who are trying to avoid it that Big Brother is trying to get. As far as I'm concerned, 10pm is a better slot for Big Brother because it can be there every night and the competition is much weaker, because BBC1 and ITV are both showing the news and BBC2 can only show a half hour programme because of Newsnight. In Big Brother's imperial phase on C4 it was at 10pm every night. I think that works as a slot people to work into their schedules, at 9pm there are all kinds of competing attractions. I think it should be at 10pm all the time (apart from evictions), it could get big shares and more viewer loyalty.


Well, Sunday at nine is a bloody good slot, regardless of whether Corrie is usually there or not.

If BARB change their minds and decide to include +1, then I will follow suit.

Congratulations, you win the award for most over the top response of the day. SamuelW will be absolutely raging that his 500+ day winning streak has come to an end, but alas all good things must.

On calm and considered reflection I think +24 should only be absorbed in the BB series averages from next year onwards in order to ensure it's a truly like-for-like comparison from then on in, albeit not entirely ideal from the point-of-view of comparing this year to last year. However the +24 performance will be worth tracking and including as a separate tally, for there is sufficient evidence that these channels can change behaviours to the extent that they take more viewers away from the original screening than they eventually add. It's hardly spin therefore to consider this a relevant factor to take into account and I resent your suggestion that I was doing anything of the sort, especially when I pointed out on several occasions that the difference is going to be fairly minor in the grand scheme of things anyway.

Could anybody with right access enlighten me as to Big Brother's key demographic performance in the first 6 days?

Whilst many on here are convinced the show is dead based on fairly volatile Total People numbers for the first week, it would be interesting to see how it's holding up in the all important 16-34 demographic.
