If ITV make ED an hour on Tuesdays, BBC1 will just change EE to 8pm so if they (ITV) do launch a new police show at 8pm on Tuesdays, it will be sunk by EE before it has even started.

An hour long Emmerdale didn't give much of a boost to the 8pm program yesterday, all it does is annoy those who like to watch Emmerdale and EastEnders.

20% share for Holby is towards the lower end of its range but hardly cause for misery, just a point or two below channel average.

I'm not suggesting ITV try and crush EastEnders in the same way Samuel likes BBC1 to do to ITV. I'm just thinking of ways ITV could strengthen their Tuesday line up.
I have no interest in crushing anything. I'm we've had post on hear suggesting that now XF is weak, BBC1 should move Strictly later and some of these aren't even from Samuel. Schedules to strengthen BBC1 Saturday night.

The difference is XF and SCD are not fixed in stone. EE is traditionally on at 7.30pm on Tuesdays. Is it fair for ITV to prevent fans of all three soaps from being able to watch them? I remember how many people were squealing when BBC1 scheduled the Voice against BGT. All they were doing were strengthening their schedule. Any move that offers a disservice to viewers is wrong. As I said earlier, if ITV did move ED to an hour long episode on Tuesdays, the BBC would just schedule EE at 8pm which would defeat the object of ITV's strategy to begin with.

People also seem to forget that the Tuesday Emmerdale was an hour long for quite some time a few years back, but they moved it to Thursdays at 8pm to pair it up with Corrie when it was in the 8.30 slot.

Actually Emmerdale on its own for an hour could pull in 6-7 million. Also EE isn't that invincible now and something like ASFF could still attract 4 million to ITV. I think ITV without its long running football contracts will look to this.

EE at 8pm will hurt whatever ITV show at 8pm. EE can and will pull in big numbers if storylines are good. It has improved recently. I don't want ITV to add more soap to their schedule. It is a lazy and uninspiring offer to the viewer. Here is what I would do for Tuesdays:
7.00pm Emmerdale
7.30 You've Been Framed/Similar light entertainment
8.00 Long Lost Family/Paul O'Grady's For the Love of Dogs/Similar
9.00 Drama series.
This would add genuine variety to their Tuesday schedule and would also make BBC1 realise that Holby isn't the be all and end all. Soaps could potentially turn viewers away.

A timeshift of 1.80m for Happy Valley! Amazing, last night's episode could very well timeshift more.
Poor clash result for Emmerdale. It used to be a few million ahead of EastEnders when it had the 30-minute head start in scheduling clashes. Emmerdale doesn't really make the most of what should be a massive advantage anymore.

They did it for a year and half in 2008/09, but having to lever a fire/explosion/death/murder reveal/siege/armed robbery/kidnap into almost every hour-long episode took its toll on the programme and left it shot to pieces creatively, and apart from a transient improvement under Gavin Blyth, it has never completely recovered.
