HDMI Query
mrnothersan

Hi,

Can somebody tell me if this actually exists or not?

I have a TV with 2 HDMI ports and 3 things that support HDMI. Is there an adapter that you can plug into the HDMI port which has 2 HDMI ports on the end of it?

And, for example, if I plugged an Xbox and DVD player into this adapter, it could use the same HDMI channel (obviously not at the same time).

Thanks!

You just need a hdmi switch. This one allows 5 items to share one hdmi port.

That is identical to about half the devices listed on the Amazon link posted by Peter_CJ. It is a generic 3 into one switch that probably comes out of some factory in China by the container load with a hundred and one different names on the boxes.

Chances are it will work OK.

Yes does the same job - as long as the customer feedback is good, it should be ok.

If you look on Amazon you will see the feedback indicates they do vary - i.e. not all made in the same Chinese factory!

The ebay one does accept returns if you get a problem, so should be a safe bet.

I think it's essential that you get one with a remote control, otherwise you may have to keep getting up to change it to the correct input. Some do automatically switch to the device which has just been turned on, but you will usually end up having to manually switch it at some point.

This one seems like a good choice.

Mine is very similar to this, but is only for 4 items.

Remote control is not needed. The last turned on option works virtually every time, if it does not simply turn simply.put in sby the last one on. Even without the remote they have a button to cycle through the inputs, I have used these devices for a long time never needed to use the remote at all.

I need a remote control for my set-up, so it must depend on your equipment.

When I turn on my PS3, the HDMI switch goes to that input, but when it's turned off, there is no way to get it back to my Virgin TiVo input without pressing a button on the HMDI switch to cycle through the inputs or by using the remote control. Putting it in and out of standby has no effect.

Also, it switches to my Humax PVR when it's checking for new software in the middle of the night, even though it's in stand-by. When the TV is turned on the next day, the remote control is needed again to get it back to my Virgin TiVo.

Poor diddums, how would you have managed back in the days before remote controls? Getting up would only be needed (if needed at all) when changing between actual devices, if you spend that much time watching the TV then the exercise of getting up to change the switch will be good for you.

I think you need a new switch. I have several and none of them work that way.

I use a switch with a remote but I can see that a basic manual one would suffice to share an HDMI input between two devices if one of them was, say, a DVD or Blu-ray player where you would have to get up to go over to put a disc in anyway.

I did manage fine back in the days before remote controls, but technology has moved on since then.

The switch works OK, the problem seems to be with certain equipment either not sending a signal when it should or sending a signal when it shouldn't.

Unless you have experience using the same equipment as mine, a comparison can't be made.

I didn't bother with a remote control HDMI switch as it's just another control to lose. I just got cheap generic one off Ebay and it almost always switches automatically.
