No Big soap plots during world cup?
Listening to the women who does all soap gossip on this morning, today and she was saying with the schedules likely to be shunted around to accommodate world cup and in some cases postponed or delayed, not to mention on the same time as an England game, she doubts very much that there will be any major goings on, BBC will also have the added distraction of Wimbledon too, she seemed to think that emmerdale will suffer worst not just football but eastenders and Wimbledon

The Soaps never really have big new stories in the Summer anyway.

World cup is not only biggest sporting event on planet it's also the only 1 which is free to everybody to watch, not to mention how much both BBC/ITV pay for it, also it's only on every 4 year's not 5 nights week every year, that's the difference, don't mind watching Corrie/EE but I wouldn't miss it fir month

However, I hate the reasoning of "it's only 3 weeks every 4 years" because it just isn't true. You have all the qualifying matches before hand and when you factor in the Olympics, the commonwealth Games, the Football world Cup, the Rugby world Cup there is actually something major for several weeks or the year every other year. Plus all the more frequent tournaments like wimbledon, The ashes, 6 Nations, tour de France. If you happen to live with somebody that is interested in all this stuff, there are nearly as many "it's not on all the time" Sports events that you're expected to put up with as Soaps. |

I thought it was obvious that the stories have already started?
The Eastenders Lucy Beale and Corrie Tina murder stories were clearly at least partly devised to keep people interested through the World Cup and Commonwealth Games. That's why there are all these big stories on the soaps at the moment.

I'll have you know that Phelan is playing for England. He's banged his colleagues partner so he could be a shoe in for Centre Back if Tezza doesn't go. All them brazilian taaaaaaarts, he'll be in his element.

Now I actually don't begrudge these big sporting events - they're not my cup of tea but I do appreciate how much time it taken up by soaps all year round so can't begrudge the air time that Soprts get.

Commonwealth Games only because it's in Glasgow this year, it generally doesn't normally. Rugby World Cup rarely does because of it being in the Southern hemisphere but it will disrupt things on ITV next year as it's here. 6Nations never gets in the way of soaps neither does Ashes as it's on Sky and Tour de France is on ITV4. I think the point is that the World Cup is only every 4 years as is the Olympics, so every two years there's one of them and it does depend on timezone as to what happens with the soaps too so in 2002 on Japan/Korea, soaps were fine. As they were in 2000 when the Olympics were in Sydney. There's sport on all the time but there's not much on BBC/ITV that impacts other shows. |
