That sounds a bit more positive about Debbie. One of the causes of the speculation was what some people interpreted to be a coded comment by a female New York Times gossip columnist who's in the know but having said that people could be misinterpreting. She more likely may have been hinting that Debbies public life may be drawing to a close especially media appearances etc as opposed to her actual life.

I bet that docufilm of Carrie and Debbie would be a good watch.”

Yes, I do get a great sense of satisfaction and pride, and my running club are so supportive. Even though they all finished the run before me, they joined me on the last lap which made it more bearable. It is funny really, I always get the loudest cheers when I eventually reach the finishing post, just because of my advancing years. I can't imagine what it will be like next year when I turn 80.

I guess that if we do see the documentary on Debbie and Carrie, it will probably be on TV.

This latest programme in the "Discovering" series was shown this evening on the Arts channel, and it was William Holden. They commented how Barbara supported him when he made his film debut opposite her in Golden Boy. But there was no mention of their lifelong friendship, or the fact that she dedicated her Oscar acceptance speech to him, six months after he died.

A year old but only just came across this article on Joanne Woodward -Hollywood actress from the golden era and widow of Hollywood legend Paul Newman.

I agree with you Walter it's frustrating that TV channels and others nowadays don't do their research properly on old Hollywood and are very scant in proper detail and cut and paste. No real feel or passion for the era and it's actors.

You are not being nosey, that is a very good question. I never really thought about it, but it seemed to be an equal amount of British and American films supporting the main feature.. Universal Studios often used to release a double feature of their latest releases, in which they would showcase their current heartthrobs like Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis, and Jeff Chandler. I guess that these would be classed as B movies, but I have very happy memories of seeing so many future big stars getting their first big break in those usually very entertaining films, which were usually filmed in Technicolor, at a time when there were an equal about of black and white films.

Dean Marti and Jerry Lewis became very big names in the mid 50's, but in 1950 their first film My Friend Irma was the second feature to Barbara's greatest Western, "The Furies." Both films were from the same studio, and I guess Paramount thought that they would release the two newcomers debut film with a major production starring one of their biggest stars.”

If you're a fan of Stephen Boyd, you might be interested in "The Oscar" which is about Frankie Fane and his journey from strip show spieler to Oscar-nominated actor. There are ny cameos and supporting roles by Oscar winners and nominees. The movie also stars Tony Bennett in his first and last movie, Elke Sommer, Jill St. John and Milton Berle. Believe me, once you see it, you will never look at the Academy Awards in the same way again.

Very sad news if it is true. I don't now that magazine, and wonder whether it is similar to that other rag, the National Enquirer. I haven't read about her illness before, although she and Paul were always very private celebrities.

STOP PRESS!!

The Sky Arts Channel - Thursday 8th September 9.30pm "DISCOVERING BARBARA STANWYCK"

I never thought they would ever get around to her, until last night's programme on Bill Holden, when they mentioned how much she had helped him. Lets hope that it has been worth the wait!

The dizzy bitch with the grating voice who is a regular on the programme, managed to get the wrong end of the stick concerning the feud between Olivia de Havilland and sister Joan Fontaine. She said that Joan had snubbed Olivia when she went to congratulate her after winning her Oscar for Suspicion. In fact it was Olivia in 1947, who after collecting her first Oscar for her performance in To Each His Own, snubbed Joan when she went to congratulate her.

David, it doesn't seem to have been released on DVD, maybe because it was a big flop.

Described as "The greatest terrible Movie of all time" it holds pride of place in the book, "Golden Turkeys"

As one critic said, "It destroyed careers and won no Oscars. The 1966 spectacle of wretched excess has to be seen to be disbelieved!"

Time magazine said that it should only be shown exclusively in theatres that have doctors and nurses stationed in the lobby to attend views who are laughing themselves sick.

It also stars Eleanor Parker and Joseph Cotton. Poor Tony Bennett is described as resembling an incontinent basset hound. .

I have it on video tape, and after reading those reviews I am tempted to watch it again, just to see if it really is as awful as they say.

If you are feeling masochistic, you can watch the complete film in 9 separate parts on YouTube.

I do hope it's not true but I think that magazine is a cut above the national enquirer but time will tell if true, accurate or exaggerated.

I seem to recall Joanne Woodward at an Oscars bash with Joan Collins in 2013 who maintained her friendship with the Newmans.

Anyway I'm going to post a link about Faye Dunaway and her opinion on why her career floundered!

I never liked Dunaway, so I don't have any sympathy for her. I am just glad that the lovely Anne Bancroft turned it down, although I do think that she would have been wonderful.

I couldn't take the film seriously after Joan walked into Louis B Mayer's office in 1943, and there on the wall was a giant poster of all the MGM stars of 1954, with 22 year old Liz Taylor, who was eleven years old in 1943.

I think she makes some good points, but it's one of those films that should never have been made, really.

David, no matter how bad it is, you still have Stephen Boyd to ease the pain.

He makes the best of the material he is given, but it wasn't his finest hour. You definitely need to see him at his best, in Ben Hur, The Man Who Never Was, and The Best of Everything, in which Joan Crawford had a memorable cameo in this all star 1959 release.

Faye Dunaway allowed Mommie Dearest to impact her career I think.

If she took it in good humour and had the ability to laugh at the camp reputation it has, 'Don't mention Mommie Dearest' wouldn't be the first line uttered whenever anyone talks about her. Instead she let it become a unspoken rock around her neck.

She's been in far worse films. To be honest, by the end of the film I thought that brat Christina was a spoilt, selfish brat and Joan was unhinged but I empathised with her intentions. And that was credit to Faye for bringing a pathos to the crazy. I think her opinions in that article are valid but if she had been more happy to discuss them in the past (the only other time I think was the Actors Studio) instead of throwing tantrums and banning all talk it would have washed over and people would have respected her more.

I think Faye's career declined because she was at that point in her life where the roles for women of her age were getting thinner. All her big female contemporaries experienced similar, there were stars five or so years younger at the peak Faye was five years ago. And with thinner roles Faye's reputation for being unprofessional (as Bette Davies would tell every talk show host who would listen) and her decision to move to UK and only pick convenient roles just limited her even more.

Goodness me one of the few golden era Hollywood stars left Angela Lansbury seems unstoppable and is amazing for her age!
Few of her contemporaries seem as active career wise, Not Doris Day, Jane Powell, Arlene Dahl etc
Amazing especially her stint in Londons West End in 2014.

Yes I agree Walter Faye Dunaway doesn't seem a person easy to sympathise with. Not overly popular with costars!

We have now surpassed more than 120,000 thread views!! 😘👏

Good for Angela, although it still; won't persuade me to watch it, just not my type of show.

Sad to see that Hugh O' Brien has died aged 91. At 17 years old he was the youngest drill sergeant in the USA Marines. He finally married for the first time at 81, and certainly brightened up my viewing of Lana's dreary Love Has Many Faces with his well filled trunks. I always thought of his as HUGE O'Brien after that!

Yes, I did notice that we have passed the 120.000 views, well done to us!

Oh that is sad news about Hugh We were only discussing him on here a few month's ago and oh my was he a handsome gentleman

Wish he'd become more widely known.

I bet he could have told us some tales especially as if I recall right he was pals with Debbie Reynolds in Hollywood's heyday. Bet he heard her curse out Liz Taylor back in the day!

I will see if I can find any good clips of him on Youtube.
