I certainly do remember her, I love Meet Me in St Louis and have the Special Edition DVD.

Hard to believe that she was 85, but then then Margaret O'Brien the younger sister is the same age as me, so I don't know why I am surprised.

On a more positive note, I did lift an 8 stone weight doing the bench press in the gym this morning, and my 22 year trainer said that he has never seen anyone of my age lift such a heavy weight, which was great for my ego.

Wonderful, Margaret O'Brien was an enchanting child, and very funny in some scenes, "I'm taking all my dolls, even the dead ones."

She was such a big box office name by 1944 that she took second billing after Judy, and over the legendary Mary Astor.

Incredible to realise that she turns 80 next month.

Time flies so quickly! Would Margaret O'Brian presumably be the only cast member still alive? Long may she reign!

A fantastic actor who should have received a Best Supporting Oscar for his performance in Double Indemnity, and Fred MacMurray should have won Best Actor, Neither of them were even Nominated. In fact the film lost out on all of the seven Oscar Nominations, including Best Actress for Barbara.

That was the year that Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald picked up Best Actor and Best Supporting Oscars for Going My Way, and who remembers that!

As a huge Issabelle Huppert fan, I thought I would post a link to this film, she has won a lot of critics awards this season.

I know we don't post reviews of films but this one is special as it mentions Barbara Stanwyck quite a lot and harks back to the fabulous "women's pictures" of the 1940's

In his heyday was Robert Redford a different kind of leading man in a different mould? I ask because I recall seeing a clip of Shirley Maclaine saying in a Michael Parkinson interview in the 1970s slightly tongue in cheek but making a series point that it was getting harder for older women to get roles because Robert Redford was playing all their parts! 😁

Was he seen as a new man modern man as feminism took off??

I don't really know much about Robert Redford, I only saw his films with Paul Newman, for obvious reasons. He just paled in comparison to Paul, although they were a good team. He was just a new leading man who appeared in films that didn't interest me.

Interestingly, he got his first big movie break playing Natalie Wood's gay husband in Inside Daisy Clover.

Well yes it would be pretty difficult for most actors screen presence and looks wise to outshine Paul Newman and the combination of his talents that had such mass appeal.

As Joan Collins said at her recent show Paul Newman was one of Hollywood's best.

A great slideshow of Kirk Douglas pictures in this article and an absolutely BEAUTIFUL photograph of Kirk with Lana Turner. I genuinely hadn't realised how good looking and masculine Kirk Douglas was at his peak.
The picture shouts out sexual chemistry to me.
I will post link in Walters Kirk thread too so that maximum number of people get chance to look at it.
There's also a good pic from 1999 of Kirk on the Oscars red carpet with Janet Leigh.

Hilda, there are some great clips on YouTube of The Bad and the Beautiful the film with Lana and Kirk. He was quite right when interviewed for a documentary on Lana, he said that she gave one of her best performances of her career in that film.

Remember that you can also see his debut film The Strange Love of Martha Ivers on YouTube. This film starring Barbara, celebrates it's 70th anniversary this year.
