This marvellous dance routine from Debbie's favourite film, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, shows just how multi talented she was.

This was the only time that she was Nominated for an Oscar, and she wasn't even the first choice, the director wanted Shirley Maclaine. Looking at this clip shows that Debbie was the best choice.

For some reason that link doesn't work, but if you look for The Unsinkable Molly Brown on youtube, it is the dance routine with Debbie and two young guys.

Thanks Walter -No wonder she called her autobiography Unsinkable! I thought it was just creative of her hadn't realised about The unsinkable Molly Brown!

Watched a few Youtube clips of her ad libbing in her own stage show in 2009/2010/11 etc. Goodness she could hold an audience.

If anyone has pictures of Debbie Reynolds or video clips they'd like to share or highlight please post!

Lovely obituary for Debbie Reynolds and it seems from today's papers that Mother and Daughter will be having a joint funeral and I think we can expect a good showing from Hollywood stars from across the generations including the golden era.

That was a lovely tribute, I have several of those films, What's the Matter With Helen is especially good. Glad to say that Rita Moreno, who is in one of those early pictures of the young Debbie, is still with us at 85 .

Here is Debbie on Wogan in the 1980's. I still have this appearance on video from when I taped it over 20 years ago

Her impressions of Zsa,Zsa and Bette Davis are hilarious.

That was a great interview and she made Wogan's job look easy. Her impersonations were spot on and affectionate.

Thanks!

I love how she's not afraid to contradict and question /dispute the claims of Gene Kelly who was a big Hollywood name on how she got the role in Singin in tge rain. She does it in such a benign way but I think she is as good as calling him a liar!

I seem to recall that in later years they did not exactly have a warm and close relationship if my memory serves me right?! 😁

PS Goodness I hadn't realised that Rita Moreno was that age I thought for some reason she was more like the same age as the late Natalie Wood her West Side story costar.

Long may she live!

Many film fans and critics say that new Oscar Tipped musical La La Land reminds them a little of the feel of old Hollywood musicals and is a kind of love letter to that era.

Might be worth fans of Hollywood's golden era checking it out?

Wow and yet your physically fitter than most of the under 40s I know!

What date is your birthday please?

It's been a pleasure and I'm delighted the thread is still maintaining interest and is so holding its own on here.

Just a quick question -Ive been doing some nosing about online and I discovered (unless it's already been mentioned on here and I've forgotten!) that Charles Laughtons ex wife or Widow? Said after he'd died that he was gay?

Do you know much more about this Walter?

Anyway Happy New Year bring it on!

Thanks Hilda, if you look on my Facebook page you can see me lifting an 11 stone weight. I also did a 30 minute Plank yesterday with a 20 second rest between each minute, it is a new way of beating my record. Next week I will do it again with just a 10 second rest, so eventually I am hoping to do it without a break. I am training hard for the London Marathon on 23rd April, just 17 weeks to go. My birthday is 12 days after, Friday 5th May, I have booked the Faversham Club for the evening and am also having a Rat Pack tribute group, they are all ex policeman, and really fabulous. Did I mention that my best friend is treating me to a Wing Walk for my birthday? I am doing it at Headcorn Aerodrome where I did my last parachute jump 24 years ago, so it is going to be an eventful year.

Charles Laughton's wife, actress Elsa Lancaster knew that he was gay when they married. It is rumoured that she had an abortion because she didn't think that it would be right to have children with him. It was said that she burned their sofa after she caught him having sex with a young male rent boy in 1930. He did have a young male lover in the last years of his life who Elsa liked very much. He was interviewed on one of the two documentaries that I have on Charles.

I was fortunate enough to see them both in a play in the West End in 1958, it was called The Party, and also starred a young 22 year old actor that I had never heard of before, his name was Albert Finney.

Charles and Elsa were also marvellous in Witness For the Prosecution, as was Marlene Dietrich. I hated the BBC bastardisation that was shown over Christmas, it was beyond awful!

Reported in the Daily Mail so at a glance I'd say this is applicable to UK TV viewers and not just the US?

Feeling a bit tired and boozy Walter so will comment fully on your post later but thank you!

If it is our TCM then you are in for treat. I especially recommend Hit The Deck, which is my second favourite musical after Singin' in the Rain. It also stars Jane Powell, and my favourite tap dancer Ann Miller, who dances up a storm! The Unsinkable Molly Brown is also terrific, I recall that it was the first film that I attempted to video tape when I got my first recorder in 1978, but I couldn't fathom out how to work it, fortunately I got it later.

The Catered Affair was called Wedding Breakfast when it was released here in 1956, and that was where Bette Davis played Debbie's mother, definitely worth recording!

So do I. I'm 49 this year. I think Hildaonpluto might be younger than both of us, though. Also, sounds like you are going to have a great time on your birthday Walter. Don't forget to give us all the details after.

Anyway, I watched Postcards from the Edge again yesterday, and it seems very poignant now knowing that some of it was based on Carrie and Debbie's life. I thought Meryl Streep and Shirley Maclaine were very good too. Maclaine's one of my favourite actresses.

In the light of Debbies passing BBC News 24 has recently repeated it's 2010 Hardtalk interview with Debbie Reynolds when she visited London doing her show. She's wearing a very colourful jacket! 😁

Oh fingers crossed Walter and co that the TCM Debbie Reynolds marathon applies to the UK!

Walter just thinking about you doing that Plank is exhausting me! The calender years are certainly not slowing you down! I'm amazed and hugely impressed! Congratulations

How many races or marathons are you planning this year?

Did Elsa remarry after Charles died?

Am I right in thinking that strictly speaking a typical Hollywood lavender marriage is when BOTH the male and female in the marriage are hiding their sexuality rather than where a gay actor marries a straight woman to cover his sexuality?

I do wonder if in years to come there will be any future evidence backed revelations about other Hollywood actors from the golden age who where bearding or in a lavender marriage who haven't been confirmed or even thought of or "suspected" in this regard?

Do you still go to the west end theatre? The only big UK star I've seen on the stage is Sheila Hancock playing the Bette Davis role in The Anniversary and she was excellent.

I think I've heard a rumour that Dustin Hoffman MIGHT be performing in the westend in the future which may tempt me....

There is a sense of the west end losing some creditability in recent years. These days it is x factor rejects, former popstars of yesteryear, wooden soap stars and even a few reality stars getting parts in the west end, I remember back in the day that you actually had to be talented, come from a theatre trained background and generally work hard to achieve any part in the west end. Thankfully, I avoid any productions with any of those sort of people. I know that sounds snobby and arrogant but as someone who is an avid theatre-goer, i know what I like and i want to spend my money and time on high-quality productions with true great talent. I just find it a disservice to those hard working theater actors who are trying to get their foot in the door, but parts are being swallowed up by Z-list celebrities who were once on the television for a few months because they had a pretty face.
