I doubt it, but then it doesn't need to be. It does very well where it is

I don't think much more needs to be said on the subject than this.

I don't think people who don't like Rock music will suddenly change their minds just because Metallica are playing Glastonbury.

For many here Rock is just another genre of music to be consumed these days.

Will Metallica playing Glastonbury encourage any young person to pick up a guitar and learn to play...maybe?

The vast majority of rock bands today would not be where they are if it weren't for Metallica's influence.

So, it's their fault then?

There is some rock music in the charts, there's been a few recent rock albums that have got to number 1 - Avenged Sevenfold and You Me at Six. Ok so 2 different genres of rock but they're both still rock.

And as has been said, rock doesn't need to be in the charts, the singles charts definitely not, I find that most rock fans are album buyers, not single buyers.

Also people are hitting back at Metallica because the the frontman goes hunting! Well he lives in USA and a lot more people in the USA than the UK like to hunt!

Metallica were THE Thrash Metal band at the time, along with Slayer/Anthrax/Megadeth, Thrash was heavily influenced by the British stuff.

As for the ignorant and practically dumb question the OP asked, just because Rock N Roll isn't in the charts doesn't mean its not popular, the majority of proper rock/metal acts today boycott the charts, Download and Reading always gets over 100,000 people each every year, doesn't sound dead to me. Look at Bring Me The Horizon and the absolute surge in popularity they have now to the point they are doing shows at the O2 Arena/Wembley Arena, I remember them in their club days. There are some brilliant bands out there, but radio wants a specific sound to fit in with electro pop i.e Kasabian, thats why I laugh when Kasabian proclaim they are 'one of the last british rock bands left', as it sounds like they are just extremely ignorant to non-chart/independent music because if you look outside the mainstream and charts they are hundreds if not thousands of bands, at festivals too, they just choose to make their money from live gigs and merch to fund albums and make a living.

I do find the idea that rock music needs to dominate the charts to show its popularity is a bit dated. There were of course times when rock music was more prevalent in the charts and probably more at the centre of pop culture/music (e.g. late 60s/early 70s). But Popular music is a more diverse phenomenon these days and rock music is just one type of music amongst others to be consumed.

Two of my kids are interested in rock music, one harks back to the rock gods era and mainly seems to listen to Hendrix, Zeppelin, The Who and AC/DC. I notice he tends to listen to 'grundgy' bands like Nirvana and The Pixies when it comes to more modern music. The other one, she listens to Devin Townsend, Napalm Death, The Prodigy, Lamb of God etc. and despises all things chartwise including Kasabian and The Kaiser Chiefs. In fact they both ignore all chart things, so I understand how the Rock canon may still go on developing without significant chart success.

I just wonder if Rock will reach people that might not otherwise listen if Metallica are playing Glastonbury which is what I think the OP meant. And I actually think that would be a good thing.

I agree, if Metallica playing Glastonbury gives people who get their musical taste soely from the mainstream media sparkes their interest in listening to more rock music that can only be a good thing.

There is no doubting Rock is very much on the rise in terms of popularity, as a genre it has never really relied on the singles chart but the fact that bandsa like A7X, You Me at Six, Black Sabbath, have all had No. 1 albums, and the likes of Within Temptation, Black Stone Cherry, etc, have had top 10 albums does show the enduring popularity of the harder end of the Rock spectrum.

I see Mogwai have been less than complimentary about Metallica. Fight!
I think that says more about Mogwai and their insecurities than anything else. i have read they did the same when Blur headlined the Pyramid Stage and they headlined the second stage a few years ago. Perhaps it is to deflect from the fact they have relised they will never headline the Pyramid Stage....

It still is Iron Maiden sell seats in the biggest stadiums, i remember seeing them in a small east London pub.

Whilst the bands i have liked for over 40 years are still in action including the Rolling Stones,Black Sabbath,Deep Purple,Micheal Schenker all still play live.

Mogwai are one of the least insecure bands on the planet. They're a bunch of fairly down-to-earth guys with a Glasgow-style attitude of not taking anything too seriously, including themselves. I suspect their comments about other bands are in the same vein.

In my view, it never became unpopular.

I was still going to see bands like Queensryche, Scorpions and Judas Priest when they ended up playing places like the London Astoria, rather than the bigger theatres or arenas they were used to.

Slating first Blur and then Matallica because they are headlining the Pyramid Stage the same time they are playing doesn't really reflect that, though.

If they are one lf the least insecure band s on the planet, whoever is playing on the other stages should be of no consequence to them.

I suspect they're having a laugh...I don't think either band is gonna steal any of the other's audience.

Not that it would matter....
