why should we be excited? it's not like we have a hope in hell of winning this thing.

the flags are starting to go up on houses where I live. I'd quite like to put my Nigeria flag up on my house and in the car, but I fear some UKIP-symathising moron putting a brick or worse through my windows

Our record at major tournaments suggests we haven't been 'shit'. We haven't been the world beaters people have hyped us to be, but we regularly make the last 8 of major tournaments so we can't be that bad.

What's odd is that for years now, whenever I look at FIFA rankings we're in the top 10. We just win sod all.

I've seen 2 sets of car flags, but that's it.

I've seen three flags on the bus to/from work (including a bizarre one that's an inverted version of the Danish flag with the badge), but that's it.

There's still hardly any flags in my area.
It's a very rough estimate, but at the moment i guess there's probably 1% of what there was a couple of World Cups ago.

For a number of reasons, there is a bit of a cloud hanging over the start of this WC. |

It is going to be an enjoyable time. So long as England don't lose to Costa Rica and come at least third in the group all will be fine.

I was driving around town earlier today and it was quite noticeable how few flags there were on display compared to previous World Cups and Euros. Maybe they will start popping up on Saturday.

There wasn't any hype at the last major tournament either.
I'm not sure what's preferable, the over-optimistic hype, or the incessant negativity we get around every England game now! |

And yet the media still can't help themselves with lots of quarter final predictions for England, quite frankly they will be very fortunate to get out of the group this time.

I think England have such a poor quality squad for this tournament and expectations reflect that. Many of their fans have probably given up hope.

I find the lack of hype quite refreshing actually. no unrealistic expectations.
Probably helps me as well that I don't read the tabloids since most of them are full of shit. |

I think if we manage to get out of the group, we may start feeling some hype - then the flags etc will start appearing
![]() We don't have a realistic shot, but we still have to get behind the time and try not be defeatist! |

I haven't seen many flags either but someone from work showed me a picture of her house this morning. She went home from work yesterday and is still in shock
There's England bunting, a giant flag covering one of the upstairs windows and a huge flag on a flag pole in the front garden. It's very unlike them but her husband has decided to go OTT this time

The odds for England are about 28.1 to win currently but they are usually around 7:1 or 8:1 .. |

You got more chance of winning the lottery and the Loch Ness monster mugging you for your winning ticket than England winning the WC.

I was quite surprised by how small the England support was in the stadium. There were a few hundred behind one of the goals and some others sprinkled around the stadium, but far less than traveled to previous World Cups.
Still very few flags up as well, which is a shame. |
