It would be nice if there was some way that you could make a wireless connection, buy I certainly wouldn't want my PC standing next to the television. I've tried it with my laptop and even that gets annoying.

It needs someone to bring out a more compact device with a purpose-designed remote handset with a plug-in keyboard. Even then, that's only because there are almost unlimited numbers of internet services that are far too varied for any manufacturer to condense neatly into a set-top-box-like device. If the YouTube interface on my TV wasn't so horribly clunky (I would use it for about 50% of my viewing). You need a PC to make it work properly and it seems that at least half of the files are can only be read by a PC or Mac.

Fixed that for you. Looks slick, but functionally dire.

Which is EXACTLY what YouView was supposed to be

The stupid thing is that they already have a service ready to go called "freetime". Initially this was linked to freesat only but as Panasonic have done on their new TVs it works as a stand alone catch-up service for BBC, ITV, C4 & 5.
All they have to do is continue development of this!

Freetime was a surprise - YouView was supposed to be on Freesat as well as terrestrial, giving a common IPTV interface and service across all products.

Freesat had even told us that YouView was coming 'soon', and Humax had even announced that they would be starting work on the Freesat version once the DTT one was finished.

At no time was Freetime ever mentioned, and it was a shock when Freetime boxes appeared

But as it's a specific Freesat service, it's unlikely to be ported to DTT - with current 'plans' looking like creating yet another non-compatible service.

It was a freesat service, now available on non freesat Panasonic TVs, AS600 & AS650 models.

TV doesn't have to be next to PC try a very long HDMI cable, I have a 10M cable in use with no quality loss.

Or get a small-form netttop PC with a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Can you get them at the Pound Shop, or do you need a £2000 one from Curry's?

Well according to the Telegraph today it seems the Broadcasters want Freeview to adopt the <freetime> platform.
Quote:
“It is understood the broadcasters want the ‘Freeview Connect’ project to adopt technology developed by Freesat, the free satellite television service, rather than go back to the drawing board and risk losing audience share as viewers turn to on-demand services from pay-TV operators.”

Quote:
“A source close to the broadcasters said: “We don’t want to reinvent the wheel again. Freesat has done a great job with its technology and it is important we get a product on the market as soon as possible.”

The shareholders of Digital UK have agreed to back Freeview Connect with more than £100m over five years, which it is understood the broadcasters argue would be better spent promoting Freesat’s technology than developing a new system from scratch.”

Be nice if they did, rather than totally messing it up as before - interesting that Graham posted that Panasonic are already doing so.

Yeah Freesat uploaded this Panasonic freetime ad to YouTube back in March.
