Help with connecting sound bar please

I have just treated myself to a LG NB4530 sound bar and now have problems getting it going.
I connected Tivo optical out to Sound bar with optical in
TV JVC LT47DV8BJ HDMI - to Tivo HDMI
LG Blu Ray HDMI out to TV HDMI
I can get a picture with the Blue ray but no sound from sound bar, only from TV.
What am I missing or doing wrong?
Plus all these remote controls are driving me mad, are the 'all in ones' any good?

There is no connection between the sound bar and the Blu-Ray player. That is the problem.

The easiest way to solve this is to unplug the connection from the TiVo box and plug it into the telly instead. That way you'll get sound from both TiVo and Blu-Ray plus the TV's built in tuner if you use Freeview ever and also from any other device you hook up to the telly in the future.

A similar topic to the HDMI cable thread.

If it is just a stereo soundbar this should work. It is the way I was hoping that I could connect things.

Sadly, it isn't always that easy.

For the TV to send sound back down the HDMI cable to the soundbar requires that both the TV and soundbar support Audio Return channel (ARC) and the hdmi cable has the required connections (V1.4) and the soundbar is actually connected to the arc capable socket on the TV. Even then many TV's won't output 5.1 input from another hdmi port on the TV.

Assuming the sound bar is capable of using surround sound input via HDMI alternative is to to use a hdmi switch to connect both the TV and Blu-ray to the single hdmi in on the soundbar.

A Optical changeover switch will allow you to connect more than 1 device to the soundbar s/pdif input, if it has only 1 socket.

Or just plug the optical lead into the optical out of the telly and let the telly take care of the switching?

The OP would only need a switch if for some reason the TV did not pass through audio from HDMI in to optical out.

My Sony TV won't output audio input via hdmi from the toslink output. Not sure how many TV's will do this.

I have checked the bar review it says the box supports multichannel pcm via hdmi from a Blu-ray player. If so using a hdmi switch to share the soundbar input (see edit) is a possible solution. It's also arc capable.

Well, thanks everyone. Have sorted it out. The optical from soundbar to tv definitely does not work. Now have Tivo optical - soundbar optical. Blu ray HDMI out to soundbar in, Soundbar HDMI out to TV in. It works but I have to switch from optical to HMDI and have 4 remote controls. Nothing is easy. Are the all in one remotes very good?
