Why do people dislike Celine Dion?
So I have just seen some of Celine's new DVD, and I personally was blown away by the excellent quality of her voice. Putting aside her personality and song lyrics, she has one of the most powerful and distinct voices in music.
Why is she so often ignored and disliked? People regard Whitney and Mariah as the standard for female singing, but Celine has managed to retain her voice and IMO is as good as they were. Her career is unparalleled. She has become one of the best selling ever, in both English and French. So what is it about Celine that people dislike? People may say she screeches, but is that the only reason? |

I didn't know people did dislike/ignore her?
I always thought the most famous three vocal divas were Whitney, Mariah & Celine. It's often referenced that way? |

Her songs. She may be technically good, but she makes bland music.

I have never ever known people to dislike her. Yes, some people won't be fond of her music but she is a highly respected artist who people never slag off or say they dislike her
She may not be commericially successful, but she isn't ignored. Her vegas tours attract acclaim and popualrity from all over the world and she is one of the best selling female artists of all time. It just sounds this you have plucked this false notion of her from thin air. At least produce some facts first before doing a thread. |

In fact I'd say in recent years, Celine has taken the top spot so to speak between the three. Whitney's voice had obviously disappeared by the final tour, Mariah has her on/off performances but Celine seems to put in a great performance each time I see them. Considering both Mariah and Celine's peak period ended with the 90s, they can still sell a decent amount of albums, Celine has been constantly performing for years. |

I've never really seen much dislike of her. Of course there will be people who don't like her music out of taste, but she doesn't have anything that specifically makes people dislike her.

She has an outstanding voice but she also often lip syncs her live performances these days.
I also find her incredibly phoney in interviews. But that's just me. |

I think it's the music and maybe the voice. I think she sounds like a cat being dragged under a car
Only song of hers I know is My Heart Will Go On and on and on and on and on it did go until we were all sick of it

I think people really got fed up of her around the time of the hugely popular but perceived to be dull Titanic song. I know I did, but I suppose now I'm older it bothers me less. It was a massive hit for her but it probably ironically finished her off too.
Lets face it, in music, unlike other forms of entertainment critics and fans at grass roots level really hate success. Particularly if the successful song is a little bit on the bland side by the critics. So Celine was screwed from that point onwards really. |

I prefer something gutsier or more soulful and not so obviously chasing the pop charts - Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, Leela James, Ledisi, Adriana Evans but different strokes for different folks. |

She is seen as MOR boring bland and for housewives. And that she has voice but not heart which to an extent is true.
I love technical singers like Celine it takes so much skill and talent to not only hit those notes but to be able to control the voice so magnificently. But for me in comparison to Aretha, Nina, Etta, Billie, Sarah and even newbiew like Amy there isn't the same passion or soul. They sing their feelings and you feel that. Celine just well wails and belts. |

Normally I never venture in here however.....
I think in her native tongue she sings very well, however in english her diction is atrocious. Make light of the fact that Titanic song sounds like "the hotdogs go on and on". Think Twice is about the only track I liked from the ninetines and maybe that one from up cloise and personal. She rolls and curls words in places they were never meant to. I agree she is rather bland, shes been belting out similar style hits for the last 14 years without any major international hit since Titanic. I think she has had her commerical peak in terms of album sales. She is in the perfect place to perform in vegas as her audience tends to be the over 50s. Compare her against people like Donna Summer or god forbid Adele, she likes emotion in her music. It has been particularly baron for the last 13 years, she has made the same mistake that other "divas" of a similar age have done...worked with producers thar are seen as cool and current....completely worked against her. As an album selling artist shes finished much like Madonna and Kylie long with her. Performing live will always be the golden goose for her. |

why do 'fans of' believe that everyone else has an opinion on their hero?
personally i cannot abide all that wailing, from her or any other 'diva' (and being a diva is not a good thing, in fact its pretty horrible) so i ignore them as much as i can. |

Foolish post. It's not as if any singer's output is liked by everyone. Plenty of people hate the music of Celine Dion. Just as plenty hate recordings by Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Cher, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kate Bush, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones or anyone else. If you want facts, the fact of the matter is that nothing is for everyone.
I dislike Celine Dion's music. I'd be hard pressed to think of much by her apart from 'Think Twice' and 'My Heart Will Go On' which I certainly didn't enjoy at the time and I just listened to a newer track 'Loved Me Back to Life' and didn't like that either. I don't dislike her music any more than that of a lot of singers out there and certainly she can sing better than many but her voice doesn't excite me and I've no time for bland MOR ballads or the musical arrangement on thse tracks I cited. I don't enjoy much by Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey either. I liked 'You Give Good Love' when it came out but it was clear that Whitney was going move from soul to lightweight pop shortly after. I find records such as 'I Want to Dance With Somebody' or 'I Will Always Love You' fairly unlistenable although I much prefer her voice to Celine's and likewise I rated 'Vision of Love' by Mariah but she went downhill rapidly too. I prefer something gutsier or more soulful and not so obviously chasing the pop charts - Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, Leela James, Ledisi, Adriana Evans but different strokes for different folks. Excuse me, my post wasn't foolish. You come on here and say "why do people dislike Celine". You post no hard facts on why people dislike her. I am not saying people generally do not artists so do not twist my words. You came across as if people in general dislike her. Like how people are towards someone like Miley Cyrus, who is a very marmite artist. Celine isn't Don't be rude and do not act like an asshole when someone calls you out when you assume and present zero proof or evidence to back up to your post. |

Lacks soul as well
She can sing, no doubt but she just seems to put nothing of herself into her vocal and it all comes across as singing by numbers. Plus her songs that I've heard or as generic MOR as it's possible to be. She's background music for lifts |

Don't be rude and do not act like an asshole when someone calls you out when you assume and present zero proof or evidence to back up to your post. I am quite aware I have no hard facts as to why people generally dislike Celine, hence this thread. I am aware, however, that if you mention Celine's name to 80% of the public, you will get a negative reaction. You ask for facts, when its rather obvious. There is even a book called 'Celine: A Journey to the end of Taste'. Yahoo Answers has at least 10 questions asked on why people hate Celine Dion. Perhaps you disagree, if so, that is totally fine. |

I'm not a hardcore fan of Celine Dion but I have some CD's of hers including the 4 CD "On Ne Change Pas" as it's her music in french that I prefer as I find it a bit less schmaltzy. I think she has a brilliant voice and seems like a lovely woman in interviews.

My reasons for disliking her are as follows...
Her wailing voice Her feigning of emotion Her songs Her sense of style Her blandness Her personality Her ego Her facial expressions Her neck Her crappy cover versions My heart will go on, drives me up the wall…and i bet every funeral director in the world hates it as well as they must have to listen to it at least twice a day. Also not a fan of the film titanic, so i dislike her through association. |

Jessie J, Cheryl Cole, Celine Dion, Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé, Rita Ora have all been the source of negatively posed threads whilst you could only say 1D and Gary Barlow have had negatively posed threads in the same amount of space (about the last 7 pages of threads). That's a 7-2 ratio. Yours above is 7-3. This suggests to me that posters here are more likely to see a female artist in a negative light than a male one. That's a working theory rather than a fact but I have strong feeling that this biased view of female artists is more prevalent than many would believe. The OP may be on to something. |
