It's not nonsense. That is what happened. You can look it up if you are unsure of it. I feel sorry for all those iPad 3 owners who cannot use all the newly released accessories as they only work with the Lightning connector.

Even Android devices have longer shelf lives than a 6 month gap, so I think the many iPad 3 owners who were furious at the launch of the iPad 4 were right to be angry.

I am not unsure of it, I remember it distinctly. I repeat, please tell me how I personally was affected by the iPad 4 release. My wife is still using the iPad 3 and she certainly has suffered nothing.


They had no right to be angry, again, how were they affected. Technology changes from time to time. Apple made one change to their connector in 10 years, the old 30 pin connector was long in the tooth and long overdue for an overhaul.. I believe Samsung had 18 different charger connectors in that time. Also, Apple are not afraid to go it alone with better technology, the lightning connector is infinitely preferable to that appalling micro USB.

It's irrelevant how it affected you personally. The issue here is about a large portion of their customer base being upset at this planned obsolescence just 6 months down the line, not what one random person happens to think about it. As I said, these iPad 3 owners would be unable to use newer accessories released due to the change in connectors.

Samsung have been using Micro USB since at least 2009. It is a perfectly fine connector and has the added benefit of being compatible with numerous devices and not just with one manufacturer.

The Galaxy S4 and Note3 could output audio via its USB connector yet retained the headphone jack. I would assume (hope) that Apple arnt stupid enough to get rid of the 3.5mm jack.

Could putting in some extra buttons for the headphones allow buyers to justify headphones that only work with Apple kit? Maybe so if it is only £20 for an 3.5mm adapter.
More likely I would suggest that headphones will get supplied with a free 3.5mm adapter.
Other reports also had ear heart and temperature monitor being put in the ear piece.
That feature could make Beats sound less a rip off.

Personally I think Apple would be best to beat a path to bluetooth headphones.
Bluetooth and bassy Beats go together OK.

The ones most hard done by were the iPod / iPhone users that bought expensive audio docks just before the connector changed. Although that was was sorted by an adaptor, which some high-end dock manufacturers provided FOC to existing customers - mind you some of the cheaper docks didn't even work with an adaptor. iPad users were not so much effected I would have thought, as they were not normally used with audio docks. Anyway accessories that rely on the lightning connector were few and far between, and were practically non existent until long after the iPad 4 came out.

I had an old samsung flip phone that used a strange mini usb style connector for the headphones. But you could not connect it to a computer. You could only get a certain type of headphone to fit the phone, same with another phone i had as well - can't think what that one was.

do not fret as china will sell you a device to convert it for a fraction of the cost.

Oh please don't. Google provide an excellent Goole experience to iOS users as do Microsoft (who give it to Android as well). The difference is Apple are a hardware manufacturer and Google & Microsoft are service providers.

I agree, google do provide excellent services to the iOS platform. That is another reason why the apple platforms are so good. You get both the excellent apple services and the excellent google services. However, I never mentioned google. All the phone providers have exclusive apps/functions for their phones. Why wouldn't they.

Yes, I wish the uk government would do something about the tax laws that companies like google and amazon exploit. It's not really clear why they don't.

when a company is determined it's very difficult to stop them. all of these tax 'loopholes' exist for good reasons and there would be casualties if they were closed. they then get used in ways that they were not intended.

unfortunately there is no mechanism for just saying 'i call BS' pay up or **** off.

I think sometimes we have made the tax laws so complex that we do ourselves no favours.

However, blaming the companies seems an easy option when it is the government that needs to deal with it.

setting up your headquarters in dublin to take advantage of their lower corporation tax is fine if that is actually where your headquarters are. are tim cook and dr dre moving to dublin? no their headquarters will be in cupertino.

We already have a perfectly acceptable standard for sound delivery digitally without the need for a cable as a bonus as well as allowing you to charge your phone, tablet or device - Bluetooth headphones and speakers. With AptX and the changes Google made to increase sound quality for non AptX phones and headphones, the problem of sound quality has largely been resolved. How about that rather than a properitary system designed to create exclusivity, profit and potentially DRM for Apple?

Of course they would. Apple is all about a unified experience. But as I said previously, Apple will sell adaptors to those who need to connect using old ports. There is no reason for people to get butthurt about Apple once again leading the way in trying to advance technology.
